Yup. That’s the part. Might be a Mocal equivalent.

I did see a new one advertised on eBay not so long ago.

Great looks like an obvious place to start.

Can you get to this without taking the front of the car off?

And does anyone know the part number?

Part number is 078115405A, but a quick looks tells me you won't find a new one.

You could remove the thermostat to see if there's anything fixable in there. Maybe you could find a second hand plate / cooler. Or you could go aftermarket. Mocal, Aeroflow, etc.

Personally I would start by trying to figure out if the thermostat has a fixable issue, but have an aftermarket one on order.

It's not difficult to replace, just access is a pain.

Here's a Russian site that shows a fair bit of detail:

I have contacted the supplier for this part that matches the Audi part number but they list it for the RS4. Do you think it would fit?

Usually, yes. The part number is always the important bit. Compatibility guides are a guide. So if the RS4 has the same part number, you're likely fine.

However, I'd also bet one of the (probably mocal) oil thermostat sandwich plates (As shoppinit notes above) from this page could be made to fit too : https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/s/oi ... ich-plates

And then you have a standard, easy to get, rebuildable (you can buy replacement stats) setup.

Agree with Matt.

I also spotted that TTE sandwich plate. Looks good.

Just been comparing. I reckon the TTE one is a mocal. The castings look identical, although I don't know which of the mocals would be the correct one - bit of measuring & thinking would be required.

Response from Merlin attached.

Anyone shed any light on the thread?

Update on this.

Fitted the sandwich plate supplied by The Tuner / TTE today. Still no joy - I was certain it would have fixed the issue.

Took it for a decent drive. Coolant is pinned to 90c. Oil creeps up to 120c at normal driving speeds/revs and stays there. However, give the car a decent trashing in sports mode for half an hour and suddenly the oil temperature drops back down to expected temperature below 90c.

What would you guys suggest next? What else could be causing high temp then sudden drop? Do I need a new aftermarket oil cooler? The fact that it drops back below 90c suggest not - I.e it’s doing it’s job eventually. Is there another thermostat somewhere in the oil circuit that I am missing? Thanks

That’s so weird. You’d think it would be the opposite. What kind of driving are you doing when the temp goes up to 90?

Can you log your atf temps?

It’s not impossible that you have a dodgy temp sensor in harness, but they don’t usually fail in a way that gives coherent readings.

Stick one of these on your oil filter and this'll tell you whether it's a sensor issue, or real issue:
