not had time to test it much, i tried pressurising it with a 12v tyre inflator but it wouldn't produce the volume of air required. now i've made up a pipe with a schrader adapter on each end so i can use the spare tyre as a pressure source. might have a go this weekend whilst 'er indoors is wrestling with the turkey

Nice Idea, however I have a compressor at my disposal - could you make some more testers?

I prefer your idea to the "drain pipe" idea as long as you get it to seal and hold the pressure OK without popping off!
Think you could make a small killing if you could come up with a few of these to sell.
If the spare tyre/schrader adapter works I think you're on to a winner as the compressed air source is the problem for the majority of the Forum (IMO)

i'll test it again with the tyre on sunday and if it works i'll put a price together, the main costs are the pressure gauge, the rest of it is fairly cheap, just really my time to put the components together

OK I've made up my version of the pressure tester (see photos)
It incorporates a 0-2 bar (0-30psi) gauge and a tyre valve. It fits on the end of the Y-pipe as I decided the accordian hose pipe looked a bit suspect to take 1 bar pressure. I have also come up with an end-cap to seal the PCV branch-off.
I have tried it out on my car and it all works. Simply attach an air-line tyre inflator (a foot pump wont do it) from a small compressor (12v wont do it either I don't think) and pump up the system exactly as if you were pumping up a tyre. Keep watching the pressure gauge and stop before 1 bar pressure. It is possible to then remove the air-line.
The pressure should SLOWLY DROP as air leaks past the pistons into the crankcase, you can hear a bubbling noise and slight hiss at the oil filler cap. Whilst the system is pressurised you can search for any leaks. If you have a bad leak it's possible to keep the air-line connected to keep the pressure up, all the time watching the gauge to maintain the correct pressure.

Right, whist making this one, I decided to make some more at the same time, including the SEAL CAP for PCV branch-off

not bad at all. i've fitted a 1.6bar (0-24psi) gauge now and a one way valve. just need a dry day for another test. is that the rubber off of a walking stick you've used for the PCV stopper?
