Is there anything behind here that can be replaced.
Is there anything behind here that can be replaced.
Trying to trace a knocking at low speeds when coasting or with light pressure on the accelerator.
All arms replaced an tight, wheel bearing isnt noisy or has any play in it and the driveshaft seems in good condition with no play an packed with grease.
Is there anything behind this joint that can replaced as there is abit of play both sideways and in an out.

I ve just looked inside the inner joint an the grease is very watery wonder if this could be the problem.

Yeah, there's a bearing in the diff that can go. YOu can get to one side with the engine remaining in the car. Can't remember which. Mavada had his done, IIRC.
Have you checked your steering racks bolts are all tight?

The rack bolts are tight.
I have the inner in bits now an the 3 bearings can be removed quite easily and the whole thing feels worn so I am hoping this is the cause of the knock. Is the watery grease normal I thought it should be thicker like the outer grease.
Someone said the engine mount maybe on its way out which I know could do with changing but waiting till cambelt is done.

ECP carry some GKN bits for these, one of my CV joints is a GKN one that I replaced. They are good quality and it’s always nice when a bit is easy to get.

Mm. Just checked. Sorry. It’s the outer they have and I think you’re wrestling with an inner there?

Yer I am assuming the cause of my knocking is the inner.

I also have some slight vibration under acceleration, i think i have issues with my joints that need looking at but not had time to strip them off yet, which side is this you have off?
I would say the watery grease is not a good sign, should be packed as normal

Vibration on acceleration is a sign of worn inner CV joints. Amongst many other things.

I only change wheel bearings if I think there's a problem with them. They almost always give plenty of warning. Although the other day I thought the Passat had a failing bearing but it turned out to be a deformed tyre.

Re: Is there anything behind here that can be replaced.
The ABS lights etc used to flicker when not used in a while, sometimes contact ring breakdown or rust can cause that, and i do get a rotational grumble although they arent terrible yet, more of a preventative measure than anything and SKF items are reasonably cheap enough
Re: Is there anything behind here that can be replaced.
Riiiiiiight so everything on the osf has been replaced apart from the outer c.v joint. I still have the knocking at low speeds but its only once the car has been driven for afew miles an everything's warmed an loosened up.
I do have a fault code 17985 which is the right hand engine mount. Could this be causing the knocking. Its going to get changed when I do the cambelt soon.
How much play should there be in front diff shaft that connects to the driveshaft

Which steering rack bolts are we talking about here? Are they obvious? Got me paranoid now, I’m gonna check mine if this is a common issue
