Gearbox Engine Oil Cooler Upgrade

Post by RS6Rottweiler » Sun Jun 13, 2021 2:54 pm

Further to my last post on the Gearbox / Engine oil cooler, its been confirmed as per the posts you sent me that the bad oil leak was coming from the union that has failed due to bad corrosion. However, looking at the other unions on the cooler they aren't in much better condition so I've decided to bite the bullet and replace the cooler and hoses. So, my next question for you guys out there, is there any upgrades to the original cooler or stick with whats there, and likewise, is there any other option for hoses to prevent the dissimilar metal issue that causes the corrosion the first place?

Look forward to your comments

I have seen the single dual cooler replaced with a pair of generic mocal or similar coolers. There's a couple of variations on the packaging, but this is one example (albeit not the actual one I was looking for). I reckon you could learn from this install and probably do a mk2 version that's a little cleaner.

If/when my oil cooler actually gives up the ghost, I'll probably do something like this.

My oil cooler has a little sweat on it at the moment.
So I’ve brought the genuine one from Audi along with all the pipes bar one 4B3317816C which is NLA, I’ve tried everywhere to get it. I just don’t want to get stuck when I decide to do mine and be like I need a pipe, beep!!!. I have a pertek and hose doctor on my trading estate and could get them to have a go at making it if need it but it won’t be genuine.

I emailed Audi today and cooler is available albeit from factory on back order so no idea when I would get it but no hoses available now from Audi. Checked else where and only one that comes up is the hard pipe along the lower front, everything else is unavailable so only option will be to either make the hoses up myself or find a company who can make them for me, it's never easy. Or, I like the other options listed, Viper, am I correct in thinking you have already fitted the option that you've posted and if so do you have any detail on the coolers and hoses? Has this set up affected the engine temperature as it blocks a fare bit of the radiator although I appreciate the air will go through the oil coolers it will warm the air or has it made no difference to temperature? Has anyone else got any detail on the upgrade options shown in the post?

I'm afraid I don't have much details on the cooler and hoses - the guy doing it in Poland put this together. I'll see if I can dig something out.

Been driving it now for 3 years with this setup - no problems with temps at all, even in the hottest days.

I can see that photo was from before they swaged the ends on. Torques UK will have field assembly fittings that can fit all those coolers so would be easy to DIY.

Hi Viper, anything you could find regarding the type and size of cooler and how they were mounted would be great. Hoses I am not too bothered about as whether I stick with OEM cooler or different set up as per Vipers the hoses are no longer available so I will either have to make them myself or get a company to do them for me as no original parts left. Making up hoses with the fittings from Torques will probably be better quality than the original parts anyway given how badly they OEM ones have failed looking at the condition of mine, hence why I am biting the bullet and replacing the lot as leaving it as it is will only give me more trouble down the line.

Hi Viper, sorry, I should have added in my last opost if you can tell me the size of the two coolers, number of rows, Matrix size, I assume they are AN 10 fittings on them? Is there a manufacturers name on the coolers, I see HEL do a serious of various size of coolers that might suit?

That install V!per has is very clean. I suspect the guys in Poland clamped the hoses together near the bottom with a nice clamp/seperator too and it'll be spot on.

This is my current favourite hose from torques. I just redid the boat fuel lines in it and it's lovely.

Got some more pics on how it's put together - bit of welding of the brackets by the guys themselves. Not much more details about the coolers I'm afraid. I can give you the size of one of the coolers - 5cm Deep, 14cm long and 30 cm high(that's one )

You can se there is 2nd cross bar mounted close to the bottom of the coolers.

I’d replace those fasteners with stainless ASAP.
