Whilst I agree with Brett that good oil is good oil, I do not agree that the engines are the same. Of course if Brett admits that he doesn't use the advantages that his mods give then its a different matter. But more importantly he has KO4 turbos and a recently rebuilt engine which is different from an original engine using KO3s.
Rees, Audi recommend 0W30. The 0 is the key figure because it indicates the viscosity of the oil when cold, and this is critical for turbos when the engine starts. In a temperate climate this is not too much an issue, however when temps are sub zero it can be. This is why IMHO it's best to use 0 instead of 10 in the winter. Our recent cold spells justify that.
Now as to the hot viscosity, there has been evidence from at least one respected tuner that grade 30 oil is too thin for the biturbo and risks early cam wear. That's enough reason for me at least to use grade 40 or more. Now you can use grade 60, but I'll stick my neck out here and suggest that it'll lose you a bit of performance and make the engine run hotter. Other than that it's perfectly fine, except that I doubt you'll find a multigrade less than 10W60 (cold).
So my recommendation is as follows:
Stock car: 0W40 all-year
Stage I or II (KO3s): 0W40 in winter and something better such as 15W50 in summer
Brett's probably fine with 10W60 all-year, but personally I'd be a bit careful in the sub-zero weather.

Good information Dippy.
Your thoughts are especially crucial at this time of year if your car is kept outside, and possibly only used on short distances when starting from cold.
As for the regime, I changed mine from Audi's 'Longlife schedule' to every 5000 miles or so when I bought mine 18 months ago on the advice of this forum, and looking forward to long life K03's.
With the costs of engine work so high, surely it's a no-brainer to change oil and filter 2 or 3 times a year.
