Complete front arm change

Post by Harris. » Sun Jan 17, 2016 8:56 pm

Hi all, has anyone done the above ? I started on mine today and had a few problems .

The front lower arm is all free but I cant seem to release it ? does the shock have to be removed first ?

The rear lower arm is also being a pain , even a ball joint spliter cant free it and where it bolts to the front sub frame I cant remove the bolt as it seems to long and catches on the floor .

Any advice would be good ,ive left it for now as it was bloody freezing up the garage today .

When I did my lower arms I'm sure I dropped subframe a little you will find it easier getting bolt out

I was booked in to have them fitted last Wednesday but had to go up north for work . so thought id give it a shot over the weekend . The car is left up on jacks and I have someone coming round Wednesday this week to fit them . to much headache for me :drink:

Also noticed my front driveshaft gator is leaking so I went to Audi and collected one today , ive found a new right front shock too and just need to find someone selling a new front left . ill replace the lot while its in bits just so I don't have a future problems .

Are you talking about the knuckle (pinch) bolt that holds the upper arms? I've read a number of different approaches. One is a special (expensive) tool from Audi that clamps on and you use a air tool to extract it. the other method I've seen is to heat it up with a torch and spray the hell out of it with PB-Blaster...

I just watched this video today of a guy doing the torch method.

So ive completed all the top and lower arms both side , all that is left to do is the passenger track rod end , one side is a 13 mm bolt and the other side (the back) is like half moon shaped . when turning the 13 mm bolt its just spinning . Has anyone done this ? is the a special socket ? as everything ive tried to grip it with just slips off

Thanks

Dave
