The best oil

Post by Tacko » Tue Mar 03, 2015 5:12 pm

Hi all,

Just been to Audi Northampton to get the RS4 booked in for her service. Been quoted the usual crazy prices as expected (£184 for 9.6L of oil!). Anyway i'm having her serviced but have decided to provide my own oil. Was given the whole longlife oil story and that Audi's oil is recommended blah blah.... Just wandering what oil you guys recommend and if anyone knew a good supplier/website to order from?

Thanks

Lee

I use castrol edge too.
But I'm pretty certain Audi always used to use Shell Helix before I started supplying my own own.

And didn't I read Castrol Edge is not a true fully synthetic oil?

I use 5w30 Castrol Edge Audi approved.
But next service I will use 10W40 ou 10W60 to reduce oil consumption.

On the German boards they all swear by Mobil 1 5w50 Peak Life for high oil consumption RS4s. That seems to solve it and the cars run well with it.

Would definitely not recommend 10w60 - its not an M3!

The RS4 use some oil at the first start, when the engine is cold (and also when it's hot at high revs ... OK ! )
So you may need to change the first grade "the cold one".
In the US, they use Liquy Molly 10W60 which seems very good :

If you use your car for regular daily stuff a 60 weight is just really thick at 90C compared to what the engineers calculated. I'd rather use a lot of oil. I'd use it if I only tracked the car with 110C+

I don't believe in the "only uses oil when cold'' theory. It would be filling the street with thick blue smoke on cold starts if it had to use considerable amounts of oil in only the first minutes. Worn oil scraping rings don't suddenly get back into shape when they heat up either. High oil consumption on these engines is common and well documented, and many found the Mobil 1 oil to help massively. It's at least somewhat closer to spec.

The other thing that increases oil consumption is how far you've driven since the last oil change.

Over the years it's been well documented on here (and I've seen it personally too) that once you get past 5000 miles after an oil change the oil consumption definitely increases significantly (for me from almost zero to around 0.5 litre per 1000 miles). This is one of the reasons that some owners change their oil every 5000 miles.

That is to be expected as oil loses viscosity over time/use. It literally gets thinner so it gets past the rings easier. Definitely why frequent oil changes on engines like these make sense, screw Audi's maintenance schedule and the long life BS.

Thanks for all your input i really appreciate it. I think i'm going to pick up some Castrol edge and change the oil every year/5k. According to Audi i wont need a service again for another 2 years after this one as the car only does 4-5k a year!!

Fusch Titan GT1 for me. It appears to get to temp quicker and runs slightly cooler...
