(To date) there are no unofficial SW versions, it seems pretty locked down, however I am sure its just no one has bothered to jailbreak the car yet.

Re control over Official SW updates, not much. You get a icon on the screen saying "sw update available", this means the SW has already been downloaded to the car and is awaiting your permission to install. Install takes 30 to 60 mins and during which the car is undrivable. So you have two options, Update now or Schedule the update to occur at a particular time. You don't know what version is awaiting your permission to install until its down and you can see the SW version on the screen. Most larger updates come with detailed release notes and a new "in car" software manual - however some smaller downloads only have a "various bug fixes" as its release notes

Interesting. Sounds like a potential double-edged sword, but a great car nevertheless.

Could be due to this:

Out of interest are there any guarentees that the car will never be bricked or is there some sort of back up/safe boot for such things?

There have been a few (as in one or two) folk who have had a failed upgrade which bricked some functionality on the car .. Tesla Arranged flat bed pickups at their cost to their service centres and replacement cars whilst they fix it

Official Forums are interesting .. I have been active (as expected) and commented on a few "issues" .. on two occasions I was contacted by service for more details, one was a silly incoming calls when your contacts are all +44 XXXX numbers not been recognised by the car.. fixed in the next SW release .. other one was crappy 3G affecting my streaming Radio service (first world problems) remote diagnostics suggested I did a car reset and that fixed it, this last "fault" included a call from service at 11pm to check it was working for me .. I have to say Audi can learn a hell of a lot re customer service from these "upstarts"
