i did a search for the x pipe, but not much came up just this tread, what gains do you get? or is it more of sound thing?

Did you search for 'scavenging' as I suggested? Loads of posts come up when I searched.

that video clip sounds great and a big difference in valve open/closed. so thats a standard system with centre box removed and x pipe fitted? anyone recommend anywhere in southwest uk that could supply and fit the section??

On the OEM exhaust the x pipe is also the centre resonator. So if you want to remove this centre resonator for a better noise you have 2 options; just replace it with the straight through pipes, or replace it with another x pipe but without the resonator killing the sound. Clearly the second option is best as without the x pipe you lose the scavenging effect that the standard exhaust has, but, and I am no expert, you could probably recover some of the loses of a system with no x pipe by remapping.

I see. And the resonators are there to keep the noise levels down to meet a manufacturing spec?

No issues with the MOT with the x pipe replacement then?

Yes, correct.

No issues with MOT, it does nothing for emissions. I have no precats and no centre resonator and have no problems with MOTs.

So who makes a good off the shelf x pipe for a stock system?

Nobody that I know of. The stock exhaust is one piece from the cat back, so any changes mean you need a compete cat back system or need a custom made exhaust. You could try and go in the middle and get something like a Milltek h pipe (same as an x pipe) and their centre section, then get a fabricator to cut the OEM exhaust and mate the 2 bits together. The Milltek H pipe will fit straight onto the standard cats.

Custom exhaust will probably be cheaper and better quality though, although this will very much depend on who you go to.

The centre resonator is wider than the 2 pipes that go into it. And why would they go into one box when every other component in the exhaust system has an individual left and right part? It's the only part of the whole exhaust that is joined.

It's flat in the middle between the two pipes. Probably cheaper to make one part than to make two and to give it rigidity.
