Transplanting a RS4 engine into a S4
Transplanting a RS4 engine into a S4
Transplanting newer engines into older Porsche 911 is very common amongst Porsche owners but has anyone installed a RS4 engine into their S4?
If so, where can I buy a new RS4 engine and all the necessary fittings?
Some of you may think I'm totally nuts, but where I live, RS4s are NOT available. Modding the S4 is not the preferred route, because there's insufficient local knowledge on mods (unless I drive a EVO or WRX).

Yes, I did. It is quite straight forward really. The only problem I had was i started off with an early pre-facelift S4 which meant I could not use an RS4 ECU. If you start with a late model S4 you will be fine. The only parts to change other than the engine are the intercoolers. Also, I would add the oil cooler cos the S4 does not have one.
Your problem will be finding an engine! I did this conversion because an RS4 engine came up for sale - not the other way around! I sold the S4 engine so the cost was relatively OK.

Hmmmm, very interesting, perhaps you can elaborate on your modification. What parts were required and how long did the transplant take?S4RS4 wrote:kozmos wrote:Transplanting newer engines into older Porsche 911 is very common amongst Porsche owners but has anyone installed a RS4 engine into their S4?

Surely you can buy a reconditioned RS4 engine from the factory? I own a Porsche 993 and buying reconditioned Porsche engines from Porshce AG is not uncommon and they're as good as new. A friend of mine swapped his 964 engine for a factory (warranted) recondition engine 2 years ago and paid equiv 10k pounds. The reconditioned engine came in a pallet direct from the factory and was essentially a brand new unit. Run-in procedure is the same as a brand new car.

Like I said above, the only parts different to my knowledge are the intercoolers and the addition to the S4 is the oil cooler. Just remembered the fuel pump is different too although some folks run high power S4's on the S4 pump. Just bolt it in and plug in the RS4 ECU.kozmos wrote:S4RS4 wrote:Hmmmm, very interesting, perhaps you can elaborate on your modification. Alright clever arse, I was referring to the fitment of the RS4 engine to the S4, not the differences in the two engines. You know better?Nordschleife wrote:a little knowledge, then........S4RS4 wrote:
