...well, took out the driveshaft and looked at the bold nr 5 from the flange axle. unfortunately it wasnt the bold, so its prob a bearing inside the diff 
looked in Elsawin, its shown ENGINE OUT jobbie...
Will have a look on the oil level to, cos there are signs of an oilleak.
Strange thing is i dont hear grinding noises, which i think should be there with this kind of play...

Can you feel play in the flange? Maybe the diff is dry.

Two Audi mechanics I know have mentioned this is common wear over time. So im surprised i havent heard of this over here.

I could move the car today for about 3-5 cm before i heard a click sound and couldnt move further forward. Yes, there's loads of play in the drive train. When you put it in P you can still move the car a couple of cm back and forth.
