Could also be the X relief relay. Quite common on VAG cars of this era.
I had one fail intermittently on a friend's car. I put an override switch on the relay to confirm, and next time the car wouldn't start, flipped the switch and it started right up. Nice positive diagnosis.

I did have a photo on imageshat but I see it has been randomly disappearing my images again. Useless webshite. Can anyone recommend any other hosting site? Not photofucket.

Oh no, not another possibility! Well, I've ordered the crank sensor so if that doesn't cure the issue, I'll get the relay.

Was in the thread - RS6 cuts out. Pic is no longer there though as you say.

Think my G28 is on the blink too, couldn't start it this afternoon and then fired up. No problem later picking up some Chinese. Now stuck and it won't fire. Vagcom shows the G28 signal is the problem.

The crank sensor is in the n/s of the gearbox bell housing . It's no going to be the easiest thing to change ..
