I think the customer is going to source a complete 2nd hand motor due to the cost of stripping the block down and repairing it (parts/labour)
although he may have to have it repaired if he can not source a motor !!

Cheap for a reason. It looks as though it's been in a fire, then it got addicted to paint thinner and now lives in Stapleton Road, Bristol and it's sold its exhaust manifold for more paint thinner.

What’s Audi UK doing about this problem or have they turned a blind eye to it? :audibash:

Do they recommend that they are removed? and replaced with these plugs?

Thanks,

Paul.

Are these flaps the same thing as the swirl valve that destroyed my first RS3s engine ?

When you blow up the picture?!?!? It's hideous at any size. If that thing was on a 1st class postage stamp I wouldn't lick it.

Hi Lee, would you mind clarifying a few things?
rs4lee wrote: [...]The only reason i am posting this is so others realise how much of a nusance these inlet manifold flaps are ,and that getting them removed could save you a massive repair bill when one goes through your engine.[...]
1- Was this engine ever opened prior to the incident?
2- What upgrades (if any) had been done physically or engine management/mapping?

The reason I ask these things is because I am surprised. I know very little myself about the RS4 engine bar what I have gleaned from this website over the last few years, and I am surprised that I have not read much this issue if it is as important as you consider it to be. I know flaps are taken off when porting and other times when the engine is opened, but I thought that was because the had a knack of failing when interfered with. You are a professional mechanic, I'm a novice and here to learn.
rs4lee wrote: [...]Plus once removed you can have the piece of mind knowing the little buggers cant cause any problems as most peoples cars are getting to the mileage were problems can occur.[...]
3- Is it really milage related?
4- Is it ok to generalise that all cars are at some imminent risk of flap failure?

Ultimately I'm just wondering if this truely is something that needs to be done to every car. I might be wrong, but you are inferring it is.

Anyone else want to throw in their two pennies?

Stu. :beerchug:

Flaps !

Removing flaps improves airflow, however the circulation of the airflow around the valves will change.

Homogenous and stratified modes are what the flaps are designed to do . With them removed the air flow will be in homogenous mode, air tumbling around both sides of the valve head (stratified mode, one side of valve head).

When removed you may see an increase in MPG when stationary.

This is my understanding

Do you think removing the flaps may help with the carbon build up as it would change the way the fuel and air moves around the valves + do you know if theres a link or any info any where on how to remove them, Cheers
