Shell VPower thoughts.....

I run my S4 on 95 as it's mapped for it but might try a couple of tanks of super to see if the mpg or performance improves.

The bizarre thing is that because super unleaded (jn the UK at least) has a lower sulphur content it "poisons" the pre-cats more slowly so they need purging less often - and purging them is done by richening the mixture and adjusting the timing to raise the exhaust gas temperature, which increases the fuel consumption.

The result?

Running on petrol with a lower sulphur content increases mpg by around 10%, which more than offsets the higher cost per litre of super unleaded which is about 6%. So because super unleaded has a lower sulphur content it costs LESS per mile than normal unleaded. Strange, but true...

I use Tesco99 or Shell V-Power whenever possible. I will use 95 RON at a push but I had a car engine blow up on me (Impreza Turbo) because I regularly used 95 (which the filler cap said was fine) when I should have been using Super.

How can you put that down to the fuel grade?

Shell VPower thoughts.....

V power for me as the shell garage is 1/4 mile from the house. Did get stuck on Saturday low on petrol so had to use normal just to get me home. (we all know a score doesn't last long in an RS4 :) )

Shell VPower thoughts.....

I had a 1998 impreza turbo that was mapped for 95 fuel however import wrx imprezas were mapped for at least 98 and a lot of owners were using an octane booster to prevent knock.
I had an Octavia vrs before I changed to my S4 and that was meant to run better on 98 but I got sick of paying extra for super unleaded for no obvious improvement in performance or economy so ran it for a year on 95 unleaded - could not tell the difference.

Page 133 of my manual - "Super Plus petrol (98-RON) is recommended"

I always stick with Tesco Momentum and Shell V-Power (both 99 RON I think)

obviously T99 ... but that was mapped for 99RON

I think the stock 2.5TFSI is mapped for 95RON

but i only use 99 in the R8

:drink:
UK RS3s have a 98Ron map, its listed on the spec sheet for the car as a separate item (i have mine somewhere from the dealer), the map can run on 95ron and probably wont do any harm

audi quote 320bhp for the RS3? but the couple i have seen dyno'd running on SUL have dyno'd at around 350bhp

I reckon the above states says more about how you feel about the cars, DK.

Girl's car = Meh, fill it with 95RON or put some cat pi$$, bothered.
Man's car = Fill it up with some Hennessy XO Cognac, please my dear station keeper.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm no expert: it was something to do with knocking and carbon build up, I seem to recall.

from what i can see a tuner/racer says dont use tesco 99, after loosing BTCC sponsorship but will not provide any substantiating facts

and you then get this post

Hi

We are a tuning company who recommend Tesco Momentum 99 fuel because it improves performance and fuel economy. This is especially obvious with higher powered/ tuned vehicles.

We were sponsored by Tesco last year but this was not continued in 2012. However this would not effect my judgement or opinion on their fuel.

We have never had any problems or failures related to Tesco Momentum 99 fuel and will continue to recommend this and Shell V Power.
