Oil change - is it just me who has trouble???

Post by Dippy » Fri Mar 26, 2004 10:33 pm

I changed my oil yesterday. For the last few times I have tried to get the oil filter off without damaging it, struggled for half an hour and then resorted to a chain wrench anyway.

This time I went straight in with the chain wrench. The filter casing ruptured and my hands got covered in oil. The filter still wouldn't budge and the casing got totally deformed so the wrench started slipping. At one point I thought I had made it impossible to remove, and then it finally budged.

Why is such a simple job such a source of hassle?

Next time you see a Snap-On van, flag him down and ask him for the smaller sized filter removal band. I have never had trouble with one of these and with the flexible handle, allows you to get maximum torque without crushing the filter

Don't want to teach egg sucking (nor am I qualified too)

1) Smear some clean engine oil around the flanges before fitting the new filter
2) It only needs to be hand tight
3) I have had more luck with a baby boa than a chain wrench
