Golf MK2s are cheap. Maintenance is next to nothing too. I used to get replacement disks for my Golf for 4.50pounds from German & Swedish and now I pay 275pounds each from APracing for my biggies!! Good car to learn to drive in and they are bullet proof. Spares are plentiful from breakers too. It is a bit dated now but are dirt cheap even for a decent 1.6. For something more modern but just as cheap to run I would go for a newer Polo (MK3?) or Golf MK3. These would cost more to insure, but may prove more reliable in the long term. They are all pretty similar mechanically though.
