Life? I dunno, would you reuse an alloy hat after the second or third set of discs.

Begs the question: why are they designed to be two piece if not to swap over the hat on to a new set of rotors?

Its to allow differing rates of expansion when heated. The main reason that solid cast discs warp is that they are clamped by the wheel hub and cannot evenly expand. A two piece construction allows the rotor section to expand evenly and avoid warping.

Thanks rs6brit. I can assume then that the bell doesn't have to bear the brunt of expansion and recoil so much, which supports the argument for reuse?

C'mon, that was a beautifully succinct answer from Brit.
The original design brief was for racing/sports use not re-purposing, but there's probably no reason why you can't reuse. Just inspect the <beep> out of those hats every time you change discs - maybe change the hardware/fixings at the same time, innit.
