I'll check to see if I have a knobbly bit this weekend before spending a grand on fitting new rubber. Is this bit on the front and rear?
Good question that man - it is only at the front.

I did check the rear end and didn't find any knobbly bits. Not chewy ones anyway..

Only on the front....

Marcus as we discussed earlier working TMPS may well have stopped this. If your tyres are under inflated it WILL hit the nobly bit.

You're probably right. My TPMS batteries expired about 6 months or so ago, and I just switched them off. Can't help but feel that doing so is a false economy because they may just save yer life! Will definitely be ordering some newuns and getting the geo done as well.

So beware all those with dead TPMS and knobbly bits. Keep a VERY close eye on your tyre pressures because as you see from the pics, it's not just some urban myth - the knobbly beast exists and is a real threat to under-inflated tyres which will deform under load and rub on it.

And even then, that pic where the two are touching is with the tyre at 44psi and not under load!

I still think its far safer just to remove the problem alltogether, which is what i am going to do.Unless knobbly actually serves a purpose??

I think it serves the purpose of killing tyres... the tyre companies are gonna hate us now, lol.

Maybe the rubbing sound complements the exhaust note somehow?

I took the view that removing the metal must surely be safer than tyres that can be sliced open at any moment.. The side profile pic effectively made up my mind because there is so much thickness in the metal behind. I can't see how the strength could be compromised.

Hell, even RS6Dave said Doug at MRC filed his one down, so if that's good enough for Doug, it's good enough for me.

Did Doug say anything about what it is or what it's for?

Nope. It might be for tooling or something from the factory? Don't miss it much like yourself!

Why would you get contis when you can get PS2 for the same price?

I'm sticking with contis as i only need 2 and i dont want to run with 2 different brands of tyre on the car,i would rather keep everything the same. Also the fact that i can get the 5P R01 tyre in 20 inch for the same price as the discontinued sport contact 3.Once i have worn all these out i will go back to vreds as i have had them on all my performance cars and they knock goodyear and bridgestones into a cocked hat

IMO of course :)

The Conti Sport Contact range has consistently won Evo magazine's tyre of the year for a balance of wet and dry handling/grip, so that's a pretty good endorsement if you ask me!

Mart.

Each car has its ideal tyre. The conti might perform well on some but less well on others. Same with the GY or PS2. On the RS6, the PS2s are ace. Maybe that's why they are the OE fitment.

end of the day it comes down to your own personal preference and driving style. If everyone drove the same way then im sure there would be a certain type of tyre designated for these cars. The new conti sport contact R01 is now being fitted to all the new RS's and S's but might not be ideal for everyone. What performs well to you might be terrible to someone else therefore there is no definitive 'must use' brand of tyre

Very true. I wonder what the R01 means. This is the suffix for the PS2 that are homologated for Audi, too.
