anyone had to have a new clutch?

Post by klauster » Tue Apr 13, 2010 10:20 am

Not sure if I'm dreaming it but my clutch is starting to feel like its on its way out, car is at 55k and not in warranty, not that I'd expect it to be done under warranty. Anyone had experience of the clutch going? What are the symptoms? And how much will a new clutch cost, ball park?

No, but I was quoted £400 for 8 hours labour by Unit 20 and the clutch kit was quite cheap £270-370 ish ;-)

Vs Audi 12 hours @£105.....

I replaced mine about 6 months ago with 22k on the clock. My noticeable symptoms:

1) wooley and high up bite point
2) juddering on deceleration which literally got worse by the week
3) what felt like turbo lag before the clutch bit and the power smacked you in the back on modest acceleration (not fun in stop/start traffic  )

I got a Sachs clutch/flywheel as a replacement which is great but now think I am getting symptom 1) above which has me worried.

Mine is in the garage at the moment. Clutch is not worn out, but it jams/sticks. Thought the problem had gone away with the pipe upgrade, and everything replaced bar the clutch itself, but alas no. (mine is a 2007 car anyway so already had the upgraded pipe on it) Had to remove the car from sale, as can't sell it like that, and wouldn't do either.

It does it radomly in stop/start traffic (i.e. driving in York on the way in/out of work in busy traffic) and also nearly on demand when you use full revs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, then change back to 3rd. The pedal stays on the floor and I loose drive. There is then a bang as the clutch unjames itself and drive returns.

All I'll say is thankgod I raised the problem before the warranty expired, and also that I took out an extended warranty.

mine isn't doing that, didn't think clutch would be covered under the warranty anyway?

This is normally down to the clutch being slipped too much by the driver (ie me) in cars I've had ;-)

Ensure that your foot is fully of the clutch before engaging full throttle ;-)

would a clutch be covered under warranty, or is classified as a wear and tear part?

IMHO Wear and tear unless an oil pipe that was covered under warranty burst and contaminated the clutch.

My clutch will stick half way too. I need to put my foot under it a pull it up. Interestingly this only seems to happen if I give it a bit in 2nd gear a few times back to back. It happened once when I was still for about 5 minutes with my foot on the clutch (it must have made something hot?)

That's the symptoms of your clutch pipe splitting, it will get worse. take it too the dealership ASAP don't let it catch you out on a long journey. (im talking from experience  )
