Drove a B7 today! Do I sell my B5 for one?
Agreed, very well reasoned and so true about the FSI engine. The B7 on the rolling road is a joke and it's an embarrasment to Audi. Everytime one runs it never achieves the correct figures.

Some rose tinted glasses fitted me thinks,4 n half years of b5 ownership included turbos, clutch ,gearbox, rebuildx2, multiple sensors, boost leaks,3 autochangers etc etc not forgetting chocolate cams,im not so sure the b5 is exactly a class winner over a b7 in terms of issues?????? A decoke on a b7 will take me as long as it did to fit 2 new lambda probes on the b5 should it ever need it,given the b7 gimmiks it kinda makes me why they are getting fitted to b5s (brakes steering wheel rnse etc) come on guys i love the b5 it rocks suggesting the b5 is some bombproof hassle free motoring is erm a little optomistic, they do handle ok when upgraded but no better than ok and you suffer a hard/harsh ride to get that improvent (std set up was nigh on useless) drc gives you the best of both worlds its a great car to drive all day everyday if you wish, sure audi should have got it sorted years ago but extending the warranty helps somewhat, look at the lap times b7 can achieve enough said me thinks,id have another b5 anyday but not as a daily driver theres better allround packages out there imo, fully understand the weekend car thing as thats was mine was for the last few years

To confuse matters I am on the verge of buying a B7 S4 Avant.
No FSI so no coking, no DRC to worry about.
344bhp isn't that much behind what most B7 RS4s produce.
Having driven it, it doesn't seem much slower than my RS4 and even if it is, the far more poised chassis makes up for it.
To top it all off I may get more for my RS4.

Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar
Nowhere near as special though.neckarsulm wrote:To confuse matters I am on the verge of buying a B7 S4 Avant.

I agree but for the money it's a amazing car and I see far fewer than I do B7 RS4s so it's still quite 'special'.Nowhere near as special though.
After 3 years + with 2.7T B5s I think it's time to move on

To add my 2p:
I think my B5 is probably the best all rounder I have ever owned. It ticks so many boxes: acceleration, grip, comfort, presence, stealth, prestige, practicality etc etc.
When I bought it I wanted an all rounder but wanted to grow up (30 now) from all the cossies and subarus I had been through previously. The B5 seemed - at the price level - to be the absolute best. The other factor was value i.e. running costs/depreciation. The idea of spending more on a B7 and knowing that it was going to lose a significant amount of money meant that it was out of the equation.
I don't doubt that the B7 is an incredible car but having not driven one, I can't comment. I'm just airing my feelings toward the B5.
Now, while the B5 is still a superb car, I feel that I haven't grown up and its just a little too civilised for me. I have also realised that what I don't need is an all rounder
Typical, I find out the hard way.
What I need is something cheap to take me to work and to keep the B5 for nice weekends. My only concern is that I'm not going to want to use a civilised 5 door estate car that is quiet, comfy and understated when those weekends arrive... I want an impractical, shouty car instead
... Hence my recent post asking what the general concensus is to the current value of my car.
I admire those of you who wish to keep your cars for weekend use only, but its not for me.
Cheers
Rob

"Weekend use" for me sometimes involves longish journeys, a dog in the boot, the occasional autobahn journey, ski trips, etc. I think the idea of keeping a car for best is a great one - I can run another car for the money saved. It also means I will keep the nice car for longer - it feels incredible every time I drive it, it's hardly depreciating and I'm doing about 8000 miles a year.
The B7 S4 has the benefit of almost a decade of evolution so must be better in many ways (standard technology, ICE, rear legroom, safety, seats) and the standard performance will be more than enough for most RS4 owners - I rarely use all of the horses. It's certainly something I have considered, especially if I could do a straight swap.

A little update. Yesterday i finally managed to look at a B7 at Poole Audi. I'd been out driving our R32 for a while and was moaning to myself about the seat comfort. The B7 has the bucket seats......and they feel exactly the same to me. So that's the end of that idea. I know there are ones without bucket seats about but i've seen nothing close to me on that front.
oh well, plan B i suppose.
