Cams
well its happened to me as well thankfully its been caught early so no real serious damage done.
been reading some previous posts on what parts people have had replaced and there is a real difference between each job - i suppose thats down to the wear each car has shown?!
my car is standard and has done 66k and was serviced every 8k miles......

RE: Cams
Standard car mate?
Sorry to hear this, it seems it could happen to every single one of them at some point.

Just reread it again and seen it's standard,it's early here in Singapore and jet lag is kicking in!!!
So the next question is, what alerted you to the fact? was it a routine check for cam wear or lumpy and loud tickover?

RE: Cams
hi phil, had the car inspected for it especially. i used to listen out for the ticking noise however, reading other owners stories that they never picked up on it, i thought it best to get checked. my advice to all is get your cars checked out.

Sorry to hear about your cams, the worst thing about it is you may not even know its happening. I had mine checked a few months back at fontain. They said they looked fine but to be honest I dont know if they checked it properly, i'd much prefer to see it with my own eyes because if there was a problem I bet there'd be no come back for them. I just hope my warrenty direct covers these sort of problems??
hi mate thanks for the kind words. defo get yours inspected better to be safe than sorry.....eyeball wrote:Sorry to hear about your cams, the worst thing about it is you may not even know its happening. Just clocked onto all these posts about Cam wear! Yikes!!!
Well, I've listened to my cold and let it heat up. With the car sitting ticking over, I can hear something more like a slight mechanical whirring, but nothing I could say is "ticking". When you take the car anything above idle, there nothing at all - totally smooth and quiet. No eratic idling at all either.
I have the bonnet open but it's really dificult to detect what the noise is, but I would liken it more to a pulley noise or something like a mechanical noise, but not ticking exactly. It's not very loud though.
But it could easily be coming from the Cam area too, I can'tell!
Is it definately a "ticking" noise you hear?
Car has done 97k and not been serviced on the long life cycle - allthough that doesn't seem to make any difference.
Not due another trip to MRC until 120k for Cambelt, what would you do?
@rtd - Sorry to hear about your bad luck (or good depending on how you look at it!)

In theory, ...yes, but you know how these companies work, they will try anything to wriggle out of a claim.eyeball wrote:So basically if they paid out once with you then there shouldnt be any reason why they won't pay out for someone else with the same problem...So who sorted your engine out and what was the cost??
Their principle argument was that it wasnt a 'sudden failure', which is what they provide cover for, rather, it was progressive wear which caused cam wear, which wasnt covered.
Happy to discuss the specifics of my case via PM if anyone is struggling with them
Yep - The cam lobe wears down, makes an indent in the lifter, and eventually wears the lifter through dropping a valve into the head and boom!missmouse wrote:all this talk about cams wearing, I assume the cams snap or something to cause engine failure?
Surely just the lobes wearing out wont cause engine failure? Just lack of power & tappet noise?
Fit new cam & all is well? NO? am i missing something here?
