Wheel Alignment
Wheel Alignment
Ok, this is the second set of tyres that are becoming fooked in a year!
1. Had the car tracked by Audi twice since getting the car (one after I was not happy with the slightly offset angle of the steering wheel). It only did about 8k miles before I noticed the very inside of the tyre was seriously bad on a 10 mm strip right on the edge of the tyre. took it back to Audi who said they would have to charge me to check it and that I could have kerbed it or done some kind of damage and it was not they're responsibilty for the tyres wearing out so bad/quickly!
2. I had another recommended establishment set it last year after putting more new tyres on. He used some massive high tech piece of kit with huge hexagonal "clamps" on each wheel. He did adjust it and it definately felt better (Steering Wheel still bang on centre). He advised me to watch tyre pressures and said it should be "ok now"!
Car's been driving very nicely!
Iv'e just checked them and whilst there's plenty of tread 98% accross the tyre, this very very narrow strip on the inside is almost pushing canvas through on both front wheels. they are so far on the inside and the wear so pronounced, that you would swear the car had been driving along with the wheel camber set at 45 degrees?!!!! It just doesn't seem physically possible to get that much wear on the inside when so much tread exists on nearly the whole tyre!
Tyres are not cheap for this car as we all know, but it's really hard to take, that your having to throw them away with 60% of the tread remaining on nearly all of the road contact point.
Does anyone know what the factory camber / toe-in/out settings are so I can make sure that he uses these settings, and does anyone out there know what else could be causing this? The car has never been involved in a prang, so it's not that.
Thanks

RE: Wheel Alignment
I have the same problem and I moved the buckled front to the rear until cash is stronger and it seems to have solved the problem for now.
I really don't understand this problem.

Wheels are relatively new (put them on a couple of months after getting the car) and are not buckled! Well not noticed anyway!Contigo wrote:I have the same problem and I moved the buckled front to the rear until cash is stronger and it seems to have solved the problem for now.

I'll keep that in mind though - cheers.

just to add the front camber is not adjustable, it is set by the design of the car, but it has to be balanced out by sliding the whole engine left or right on its sub frame, to get half each side. So it can only be balanced and the value noted.
if your tyre ware is the same on both fronts then i dont think it is that because one would be different?, that only leaves toe in.

Strange! RS4's (IMO) dont eat tyres, when i had my first one i was doing 30k a year and the tyres were wearing evenly across the tread and lasting circa 20k..jimbo1234567 wrote:killing too many evo,s
Sounds like a combination of camber and toe. Must admit i have given up with garages and tracking and track my own now.
Its amazing how accurate you can get it with a level surface camber gauge and a role of fishing line..

the subframe alignment is set by lining up 2 holes in the subframe to 2 holes in the chassis at the front of the car. thes are th e same size as a 3/4 socket extension bar.
