How much are these ? , i see a few people not using them also is this actually safe?

I bought a Laser setting bar from GSF, I think it cost about £40 or so..

It's going to be more accurate using the bar & locking pin, but in my opinion it's going to be safer too because you don't risk one of the pulleys spinning, damaging valves on pistons. In the olden days I used to use Tippex to mark the pulleys, but I don't anymore and certainly wouldn't risk it on one of these engines.

may be rent it of you, i would use tippex but im sure something would go wrong knowing my luck

dont use tippex !!,the timing WILL be out after the crank and cams must be locked on these engines to correctly set the valve timing,no-one wants a big bill for a lot of bent valves do they

As suggested above, the cam timing will not be exact if you use paint.

When tensioning the belt you need to crack off the cam pulleys so they are free turning and lock the cams using the correct bar/tool. With the crank locked as well you can tension the belt correctly.

Once you have timed the engine using the correct tools, tighten the cam pulley bolts, remove the pins and bar, turn the engine over on a bar slowly for two rotations. Re-check the timing and it will need to be set again, you may need to do this a few times to get the timing spot on.

Contact phoenixmotorsportuk on ebay, he rents them out. Basically you buy the bar off him and them depending how long you keep it he refunds you a percentage of what you paid, 80% for 7 days, 70% for 14. Basically it works out about 20 quid for a week if that.

Didnt realise all this was needed to change timing belt , tensioner,pump and thermostat. If its gonna need all this timing stuff i will have to take it to a garage.
