Second about getting it direct from Ross Tech.
Think about which lead you buy:
1) do you have a USB port on your laptop? Then get a USB lead, when you replace your laptop it almost certainly won't have a serial (RS232) port.
2) do you plan to get a newer VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda at sometime? Then get a HEX-USB+CAN (or HEX-COM+CAN) lead - that will be compatible with your RS6 and all current models too.

Got mine from here, with the current exchange rate probably nearly as cheap as buying from the US.

get this one

by the time you add exchange rate costs and import tax it is the same or cheaper to buy from a UK dealer...

If your looking for a more budget approach...
Just brought a VAG-COM USB cable for the RS4 B5 off wePay £14 (seller gps-ppc). Very prompt delivery, very good support, CD comes with the USB driver and 409.1 from Ross-Tech. I'm using it on a virtiual macine inside VMware Fusion on a Macbook and it works a treat. Car was running limp in 1st gear, scanned the faults, cleared them out, now it's running like a dream again. If your not looking for all the bells and whistles like the newer OEM Ross-Tech versions then this maybe the solution for you. If your based in the Windsor area I'd be happy to give a demo.
