Bushy
I have a theory as to what has caused the problem you discribe, but I need to look at it to be certain.
Whatever the outcome, be it defect or incorrect instalation, I will replace it foc and if we can make the arrangements I will fit it into your car.
I don't know if I can do it on the 3rd, if not then I am sure I could do it at the rolling road meet on the 5th.
Karl

Superb Carl

I knew that you would, never doubted you mate. Service makes all the differnce these days, get your Tanoga shifts here - advertising/marketting mode off

I see the bearing you useis in fact strong enough for the job, which was my initial thought on the subject, it is where the bolt goes through the aluminium shaft that it has worn, i suggest some sort of insert to stop wear.

But when you get it you can comment

Also i did not really realise your shift had 2 settings so when i get it fitted next time i will go for the 40 degree no the 30 degree

At the rolling road will be great mate

Cheers

If the Stat one is the same then I guess I'd better get AMD to have a look at it - prevention being better tahn cure after all.

Bushy - did the shifter cause the gearbox problem?

I dont think so

The play in the shift can only effect how each gear is selected

The gearbox problem was actually synchromesh on first/second gears failing, then ultimately breakin ginto pieces inside the box

Bushy
I have today received your short shifter through the post.
It is with great pleasure that I detail my findings.

You are correct in your comments regarding the wear/play in the bottom linkage and I have to say that the design of it is an absolute piece of sh!te.
The only problem is the shifter that you have returned to me is NOT a Tanoga shifter, it is a UUC or Stratmosphere one. I cannot say which one as I have not seen either before.

I can bring the shifter with me on Monday and let you have it back, and at the same time show you a Tanoga shifter

Well to finish this thread off I must explain that eh shift i had was probably a Stratmosphere one

As i believe the UUC one is well engineered

The bottom linkage has a steel secion (the gear lever) with a bearing in it, good idea to save wear, this has an aluminium forked piece which connects to the gear linkage and is bolted through the bearing
However theis is pooor as the bolt has worn the aluminium piece and in fact has not needed the bearing as it has rubbed on the aluminium section

Clear as mud?

Basically i have gained around 5mm of play in the shift which cannot help when selecting gears, this has happened over say 15k miles and cannot be good for the car!

I am now the proud owner of a tanoga shift, no contest, much better engineered and feels superb, the throw has been reduced, as the last one had 2 settings 20% and 40%, the Tanoga is 50% and feels really positive

I am sure the car drove quicker on the way home yesterday

Thanks Karl, should have just gone straight to you the first time round.

So the Tanoga fits S4/RS4 hurry up and get one for the S3 guys. They will appreciate it as much as I do,

Karl put one on my S4 yesterday. Amazing, best money I have ever spent on a car.

Highly recommended, must be the best cost/benefit mod available for RS4/S4.
