Knocking noise when manouvering

Post by MrM » Tue Nov 25, 2008 8:21 pm

My car has an intermittent knocking noise from the front when on full right lock at parking speeds.Bizarrely this only occurs when it is wet!
The dealer has looked at it three times ,the first two occasions they could not find anything. On the last visit they replaced a defective cv joint . Unfortunately this has not helped.
Does anyone have any ideas.
Thanks

I had a repetitive "ticking" noise when making left turns...from the front right hand corner.

Initially Audi replaced lower-drag links which cured the problem...temporarily.

It re-appeared about 6 months later and a one new wheel bearing later, its gone again.

I'm waiting for it to re-surface!

However, when you say, "knocking", I hazard a guess its not the same noise...

Its not the old "graunching" noise which you get at full lock which is a function of the low profiles and the inability of the respective rubber to move across the ground smoothly at such tight radii of curvature....

No it's not from the tyres - I'm aware of that quirk .Thanks for the advice on lower-drag links ,I will mention that to the tech .Just want it fixing before warranty expires.

I have had the same problem on both sides 4 or 5 times wet & dry conditions, each time they replaced the CV joint which seemed to help for a short while. The car was in last week for the same problem but they failed to rectify the problem again. It now looks like they don't know what to do and have said their isn't a problem :audibash: I will be speaking with Audi UK this week, i will post any feed back.

I am aware of what you describe .. I suspect it can't be fixed as such .. I feel it is to do with the CV joint, just being at the 'wrong' place when you turn ... that it is why it is not a hard fault .... should it do it ... well no ... can you fix it 100% ... well no ....

Mine does it, my A4 did it and my wifes cab does it but only in the wet.
I know the noise sounds terrible but I suspect its a case of, Oh! they all do that Sir.
To my mind if it goes away in the dry which it does dont let the dealer near it as it may come back worse.

cheers steve

My RS4 does it, my S4 before it did it, my A4 before that did it and my S4 before that did it.... they DO all do it (at least that's my experience).

Can someone expand on the "graunching" noise please.

I'm unsure if I'm possibly suffering this or if it's a more serious problem :? Car is in for a service next week and was going to highlight the problem.

It's on a 2007 A4 S-line with 235/40 R18 tyres.

Was going to say exactly the same myself (although I didn't have an S4 before my A4 - just one after, but before my RS4!)

Have had the same problem on my S4, but only when front tyres are down to about 1.8mm then once tyres replaced (with same tyres) the noise dissapears until the tyres wear down again. This has happened on 2 sets of front tyres now.

Just my thoughts and probably not everyones problem.

Same here; developed the 'quirk' when my last set of tyres were low but was cured as soon as the new boots went on. Started to develop the same thing now as the tyres are on the way out.

I get it. As above, only when it's wet or "damp". It seems to have got worse over the last few months. I put that down to the tyres but have since changed them and it still happens.
