M5 bashing, well almost

Post by al'srs4 » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:50 pm

Had an interesting little rumble with an (05) M5 tonight. Came up swiftly behind him, saw him eyeball me in the rear view - then swiftly plant his right foot. Plooms of smoke bellowed from his rear as we headed into the countryside. Wondered for a moment whether I was boxing above my weight until it became clear there was no way he could shake me. If the road had been clear I really think I could have taken him. He was definitely trying and for around 5 miles I could have out paced him particularly round the twisty bits. unfortunately suburbial loomed and the fun was over - back to drudgery.

Oh well fun while it lasted.

Be interested to know what the smoke was all about if anyone knows.

530d with an M5 badge? :D

Seriously though, not sure on the smoke. Loads of fuel being dumped into the engine when he floored it?

Always fun fights with the Bimmers & more so the M's.

Believe me though that in the dry with like for like drivers you'd not shake an M5 as the chassis & power delivery (close on an extra 100 horses), would ensure that. If very tight/twisty or in the damp/wet you'd smoke it.

As for the plumes of smoke, i can't say i recall that in my M5, however if you nail the RS4 at night with headlamps behind you, just check out your rear view mirror at the diesel levels of smoke the RS4 chucks out so i guess the same happens in the M5 & IIRC it's down to the fuelling in those "efficient" modern high capacity engines

I know the beenie wagon has 100 more horses in tow. But surely the power to weight ratio means the RS/M5 are very similar.
Interestingly the new RS6 has buckets more hp than the RS4, but in an outright drag to 60, the RS6 is only 4.6 secs, (.2) difference.

Most B7 RS4's dump a load of smoke out of the back when being driven really hard too..... well mine does anyway.

M5 vs B7 debate again it's close but the BMW edges it in the drag race, but as you say on the twisties it's got to be a close run thing.

Incidentally you guys seen the M3 E92 vs the B7 in stock

Red B7 you see, I've always said the slowest colour :D

Now first off, this video is not of an M5 but an M3 and I think it's a B5 not a B7 but I just love this and this thread reminded me of it. Keep an eye in the rear view mirror of the RS4 but the best bit is the sound - just friggin awesome!!

On a slightly off topic point, it seems like someone has flicked a switch on my Cab, it's just turned 10,000 miles and it's as though Audi have programmed into the car that when you have reached 10,000 miles you can now go out and have some proper fun. I came up to one of my favourite roundabouts this moring going to work, I could see that it was all clear so it was a quick change down to second and floor it - bloody hell this thing just bit and what seemed like a second I was into 3rd with my head being thrown back onto the headrest. I must have got everything just right because I've never felt it drive like that before so I tried it again on the way home, and yep, just the same. Fan-bloody-tastic. I can't wait to go to work tomorrow now. God, I just love this car.

Waith until your reach 20K miles and 25K miles, it just gets better. My old S4 was like that as well, they really loosen up after 20K miles and just keep improving, along with the fuel economy. On my commute to work I am regularly seeing 28.0+mpg on the DIS even with a bit of hoofing it.

BTW I had a bit play with a new M3 last week and even swapping positions there is little in it in acceleration terms, neither of us were losing ground on the other from 50mph onwards. And this was a convertible with their new flappy paddle box.

Of course the power to weight has an impact & the M5 Saloon is about 250KG heavier than the RS4 Saloon, but i'm sorry to say the M Division always somehow have the edge when it comes to overall driving dynamics, gearboxes & engines. Now don't get me wrong, having owned an E60 M5 for the best part of a year, i overall prefer the RS4 i have now as in this country i believe it's the most complete package for a performance saloon, however when the conditions mean that Quattro is of little or no advantage, the superior chassis & engine of the BMW's win through.

BMW have won the engine of the year awards for the last few years in both petrol & diesel. For the last 2 years it was the V10 in the M5/6 for petrol & this year it's that peach of a bi-turbo 6-pot.

Trade off is that in less than perfect road/weather conditions, the RS4 will easily have either car (M3 & M5) licked as it's so difficult to push either even to 50% of their limits in the wet. As i live in the UK with less than favourable weather, the RS4 is the better on the road offering, but it's certainly not quicker/better then the M Divisions finest, just a better all round proposition for the UK.

Worth noting though that in total stock form, the M5 Saloon is a good £15K more expensive than the RS & with the must have options that's more like a £25-30K difference. An exceptional 2nd hand buy though at the moment.

If i lived in Dubai or California, then i'd take the M5 all day long, but would struggle to like the M3 given it's image

Which makes that M3 Board video a little suspect....but then again, when have you ever seen a BMW lose in a video on a BMW board?!

As for the M5....maybe he was in "400hp" mode when you came across him?

I've never been in a E60 M5....but I must get a drive in one one day....

Actually, while we don't get rain in Dubai much, the dusty roads have seen quite a few RWDs out :)

I experienced the same thing with my RS4 at 10,000 miles - definitely feels quicker. Has anyone noticed the difference Shell V Power petrol makes? i found it really makes a difference! Better than the other high octanes i've tried
