I'm having the same timing chain noises on my 04 S4 Avant.

I was wondering how difficult it was for you to get the dealer to accept there was a problem. Did they acknowledge it as a known issue?

I only really notice mine when firing up in the morning, and the cold weather seems to lessen the noise, presumably because the cold oil is more viscous and doesn't leak out of the tensioner so quickly.

This may hinder my attempts to get a warranty fix before it expires in March - especially if the dealer denies any knowledge of the problem.

Surely this is a problem with all Audi V8's of a certain vintage???

I had no issues with my dealer when I showed him the bulletin. Others have had a nightmare.

Can anyone point me to a copy of the Timing Chain TSB?

Or give me the reference number?

Errr ... can't see anything here about timing chain tensioners. Only stuff about front rubber belt tensioner.

Can someone confirm or invalidate the information about this TSB ?

I went through many TSBs related or not to the S4 and the only thing I can find is TSB150401 superseded by TSB150603 which on contrary declare that for many motors (but S4) it is normal to have some rattle at start.

Thanks in advance.

If you get this sound then it gets fixed with the tsb.

Many thanks !!!

At least it is clear which noise is supposed to be addressed with this tsb
In my case, I have the rattle you can hear just after you started and not the whine you experienced.

Every one gets a sort of rattle which is the chains before they tighten. Not sure if this is what you have though.

The point was for me to get confirmation from Audi (which I never got) on whether it was normal or not. I never had that in the past with the BM and before my extended warranty expired, I wanted to be sure.
Again many thanks for the little document and I hope yours will get quickly fixed.

From what I learned, they produced a change about the control of valves in admission and the exhausts. Without that update, in addition to the rattle, you can have some beat noise.
That the change I had on mine and only left the rattle. In addition the throttle response is definitely smother now.

I have the same issue. If anyone who has had this fixed and has a reference number (and ideally is prepared to supply their dealer name and reg number) I'd really appreciate it as I'm having a nightmare getting Audi to recognise this as a common problem -- demanding some evidence of it occuring elsewhere. Thanks

Hi All, I have the same issue. Rattle clonk clonk on start up, every time from cold or if it has been left for half an hour or more from hot.
It is an 05 with 25k on the clock.

The dealer topped up the oil and said it was better at the first attempt ot cure it, i personally can't detect any difference. They are also dealing with some other issues, no problems with accepting liability so far, can't fault them.

Its going in at the end of the month for a new rear diff, slight clonking on hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gears, factory advised diff change. I'll ask them to look further at the timing chain rattle clonk then. I would also like any correspondence that shows Audi recognise this as a fault in case it gets nasty.

Nidfix, do you have a TSB or other reference regarding that update, it might help mine also.

Andy
