Side light bulb

Post by Nodds » Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:12 am

Silly question i'm sure but, I have a side light bulb thats blown. I know that the car has the xenon headlamp set up, but does this mean the sidelight bulb is a special or just a standard unit ? :?

Thanks

They are halogen I believe, replaced one last year...went to various car part stores,,couldn't find correct replacement...ended up going to Audi and buying one for £5.
Easy enough and straightforward to fit though.
2000 B5 S4 facelift, sadly missed...enjoying the 2005 A2 TDi Special Edition though!

You can get the standard sidelight bulbs from Halfords. The bulb code is 501 12V/5W, and it's around £2.50 for a pack of two, IIRC.

This is for a pre-facelift S4; some folk have said that facelift has a bayonet fitting sidelight bulb.

As for easy to fit - well, it took me a while ... and a socket set ... and cost me a couple of knuckles! It's easiest if you remove the igniter from the back of the Xenon headlight unit and get the bulb in position by peering in through the glass at the front.

Post by jamiepoole1 » Tue Jul 17, 2007 11:02 am

if your car is a facelift then i can confirm that the bulb is different because i have just changed mine. They are a H6 bulb. Got mine from directbulbs.com. I wanted led but they dont do them in this bulb!!!!! i fitted mine in about 5 minutes they were really easy

Facelift here and also got it from Halfrauds, think it was a 207 12V/5W(?). which is a standard replacement bulb.

Either way you should be able to get it from there and good luck with the fiddly job ahead.

It might be worth giving the bulb holder a wiggle as I thought my sidelight bulb had gone and it turned out to be a loose bulb

I'll second that. I spent absolutely ages, in the thunder and pouring rain, replacing the bulb and it turned out bulb was fine just a loose connection

i got a pair of cheap LED bulbs from the local car shoppe, about 8 quid but they're a conventional bayonet whereas the S4 has offset pins. i just filed one off and they work a treat, much closer to the colour of the xenons

Whilst at Doug's one time we had a look at the bulbs fitted to a facelift headlamp and the sidelamp bulb was a T4W but when we came to replace mine it was an H6W which has offset pins and as the name suggests is a 6 Watt bulb (T4W is 4 Watt).

Perhaps there are differences between different model years on facelifted cars, best to check by pulling it out to be sure.

i got these for my facelift to compliment the Xenons. I got them from sameplace as was posted above which have the offset pins. I just gently pulled the wire giving it a little wiggle and it popped out really easy. To put them back in turn the sidelights on when you've swapped the bulbs that way you can see from the outside where the hole is then just push back into place.
As you can see from the pic it looks a lot better than the crappy yellow light. Not sure on the legallity of the LEDs but mine just went through mot with them

look loads better than the standard yellow ones, being sad i leave my sidelights on when parked so the poor people can enjoy the exempliary brightness afforded by LED technology
