Cost of a cambelt change?

Post by ADP » Wed Mar 14, 2007 12:08 pm

HI All

Going to look at a car - Ive found out it needs the cambelt doing(overdue actually) and a service

Can anyone give me a rough idea on cost of this! ? This is obviously going to affect how much Im prepared to give him for it!

Thanks - that was my guess, Im not driving it anywhere till he does it. The way I see it If I buy it before it could go wrong on the way to the dealership - leaving me fuuucked, if he does it up front I have no risk.

Approx £450 for the cambelt at main dealer, also make shure all the idler pulleys, tensioner, water pump, thermostat and auxillary drive belt get changed at the same time.

That's good. I was quoted £915 and £1000 by my 2 nearest main dealers to include all the pulleys, tensioners and water pump and an oil change at the same time. Had it done at a specilaist independent instead at £350 instead.

Main dealer £ 450....I'm sorry but I don't believe that for a second! My last belt change by a stealership was about £ 950 + vat. QST at Haywards Heath publish a 40k service at £ 735 + vat.

I think that it is Stafford Audi that advertise that price on ebay with two years parts and labour warranty but they dont have a listing at the moment.
Obviously that is for a belt and idler change not the water pump and thermostat etc, a genuine pump and thermostat is approx £60 that is what i paid three months ago.
It takes no more than an extra hour to fit the pump and thermostat whilst they are doing the belt.

Ahh...you can rely on Audi can't you. It's due every 40k or five (??) years.

I bet they wouldn't have coughed up if the belt snapped at 50k.

Sounds about right. If they think it needs doing leave them to it but it should have been done at least once by now. Get a quote from a local dealer then take it to the likes of Doug@MRC and get a full health check at the same time. That's if you buy it of course!

Deffo check that it was done at 40k miles!! And next one will be due at 80k miles.

Also ensure that the work suggested by boxerdogted is done next time too. Far cheaper to replace that lot when the front of the car is off for the cambelt change.

and the relay lever, and the aux belt tensioner should be changed. Make sure they use the correct locking tools(test them and ask if they use the cam pulley, pullers) otherwise your timing will be out.
