They're the ones! How do you find them? Swapping tyres is always an awkward issue. I hardly want to spend £700 - 800 on a new set of tyres, just to find that they're worse than what I had. I think I'd rather stick with what I know rather than suffer a potential disappointment.

However, I certainly have no concerns over any particular aspect of the Dunlops.
The Dunlops wore OK, but since I swapped wheels for a track day I've been running on some old Pirellis. They survived the abuse (twice) so I've kept those wheels on over Winter and will either run them to a safe minimum or kill them on a final track day.

The Dunlops with RS suffix may be of a slightly different compond to non-RS ones so will not necessarily wear the same. Try a good independent or maybe Hi-Q. I used to work for a fast-fit owned by Michelin, so will be getting some PS2s fitted by my old colleagues (who were unable to find the Dunlop Sport 9000 RS). Convenient?

Knocking from the suspension makes the warranty worthwhile

Post by ndanson » Fri Mar 17, 2006 9:17 pm

I got a high miler RS6 last October (90,000m) which came from a dealer with a warranty. Within 6 weeks it was making a knocking noise from the suspension, I went into the dealer, explained the problem and then techie just said, 'yup, valves, book it in', didn't even look at the car.

It was all covered under the warranty but the cost to replace 2 valves etc was £1400! I think I'll take it in and complain about the other ones some time before the warranty runs out, get them changed as well.

I've noticed that going over some bumps can cause the accelerator pedal to shake, anyone else got this problem. There aren't any noticeable noises and the handling seems fine.

Any ideas?

The pedal 'shake' is exactly what I experienced.

Chester Audi refilled the front dampers and hey presto, shake gone and the handling much more communicative again.

Suspension suspect?

Post by langstone » Sun Nov 12, 2006 3:18 pm

Got my RS6 on Friday (delivered from audi dealers with audi warranty) and obviously have been trying it out over the weekend.

Somewhat concerned with slightly iffy handling/braking on bumpy roads and quite a lot lot of banging crashing from suspension when initially driven gets better after a mile or so. Would the panel suspect the shockers/DRC?

Also during experimentation put foot down hard around 40mph on slightly damp roads huge burst of acceleration but the esp light was going nuts. Normal?

Power is immense, straight line performance superb just slightly less confident than I feel I should be on twisty bits when compared to my old a6 2.8Q.

Get a torch out and have a look to see if you can spot any hydraulic fluid leaks, although if you had a major leak/failed damper then the noise would be constant, not only when cold as such.

Your symptoms sound like air trapped in the dampers, appears to be very common if any of the dampers have been replaced at any time as it is very very difficult to bleed the DRC system. I do actually feel sorry for the dealer techs as its the design of the system that makes it hard to maintain, not the technical abilities of the mechanic.

I was getting similar symptoms, particularly from NSR corner... After a lot of discussion with my local dealer to convince them that it was probably a minute amount of air trapped in a damper; I eventually convinced them to bleed the system FOC and it has made the car feel and sound like new again, a lot more confidence in the handling. :D

Mine was pissing out (puddle on garage floor) and there was only a very slight noise when cold.

If you're losing traction on a straight smooth road, I would definitely suspect DRC problems (unless there's diesel mixed with the damp!).

When my suspension failed, there was loud banging from the area of the nearside door sill when driving over some bumps. The other obvious symptom was a sideways (yawing) twitch when passing over undulations such as bridge expansion joints on the motorway.

The road is not particularily smooth typical sort of B road round here not potholed but undulating. May have been leaves, vegetation ton the road.

Having driven the car some more I'm now thinking it's more a lack of damping action. The car is a bit floaty, wallowy at low speeds like an american limo but taughtens up as speed increases. I'm not really getting any banging noises.

I took the car down to a local tyre place and we put her up on the ramps and could not see any leaks, the fellow there said all the bushes look fine and the tyres are wearing nice and evenly.

I rang the dealers and they were very good about my concerns, and are picking her up on Monday to have a look!

DRC my guess as well.

My old RS6 had a liitle bit of a knock and squirm under power so I toook it in and said it was all over the place and they found two leaks.

They called it the "accumulator". We know it as the DRC - it's fcuked, 500 notes to replace plus 200 for the shock. Then there's the labour.

update on suspension probs.

Post by langstone » Wed Nov 22, 2006 1:33 pm

They, the dealers picked up my RS6 on Monday, left an A4 1.9tdi, in it's place (performance is a little lacking compared to the RS6) :?

They have told me they are ordering some special oil to top up the suspension which is due in to them today! Then they are going to refill or top up the system and see if this cures it.

regards

Mark
