i've just modified my standard one after looking at clives kit. results are pretty much similar in that the shift distance is greatly reduced, much more precise, "switch like" would be a good analogy. took me about an hour and a half and cost nothing.

all i did was remove the lever en-mass, drill through the cast alloy piece at the bottom of the lever with a 3.0mm drill to give me a guide hole, that was about 15.0mm down from the existing bolt. then remove the bolt that attaches the alloy casting to the nylon shaft and open the hole in the nylon to accept the metal bush from the old hole. redrill the alloy casting to suite the bolt and re-assemble. once it was all back together i extended the existing thread for the gearknob by 30mm or so using an m12x1.5 pitch die and then lopped 30mm of the top, job done.

Don't flame me for saying this - but I love the standard shifter just the way it is. Maybe I should try a short shifter for a while. I just like floppy wristed gear changes with fingertips......
Reminds me a lot of my old Passat GL5. My wife has a A4 '96 V6 2.6 which I'd describe as being like a d1ck in a shirt tail. Big lazy changes. I love 'em.

Got mine on Wednesday and will be fitting it tonight, but as said I have found the reverse pin a lot larger than the hole so I will drill it out a little to allow it to fit. I may bring it to Audi International this Saturday and do it there as I will be there all day.

it's a bugger to drill without a vice, we struggled with a workmate but resorted to standing on the thing in the end, not very professional but we got there in the end

I have the Tanoga but found it too long (the actual gear stick not the throw) so cut the thread another 15mm or so and lopped 10mm off the top, shortened the plastic under the leather gaiter by 10mm as well.
Miles better, I think the Tanoga product keeps the same gear stick length but shortens the throw, just the 10mm off the length mahes all the difference to the feel and action.
Btw - the bottom allen bolt adjustment is what causes the 1st 2nd gear selection probs, if it is not adjusted right (side to side, ie lean on the stick left or right as u tighten the bolt) then you can feel it trying to go slightly left as u push slowly against the gate into first, adjust it to help it that way and it will be fine.
