BM Town Front LED units for B7?

Post by RS4-Chew » Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:43 am

It was only a matter of time before it was mentioned...

anyone took the plunge with LED DRL units for the fronts from BM Town?

Ive seen several DIY LED mods etc but just wondered if anyone has any further info/pics/opinions on them

see below pic (from BMT website)

may be a bit OTT especially with LED rears - cant make my mind up, especially not from one lowish res pic.

to clarify - Im referring to the main lamp unit not the lower LED strips!

discuss

I will not go with them but what I would like if BM had LED bulb to replace our existing running light bulbs. They seem just like a rear tail light bulb so theres bound to be a replacement . If we can get number plate bulbs (which I am ordering today) then we should be able to bet new running light bulbs, right?

the problem with aftermarket from lights is they are crap. The are not bi xenon and not adaptive...

Aftermarket rears are good because OEM are so basic

I took out one of the DRLs and it is a regular 12v 21w bulb. Have asked BM if we can get LED version and also LED rear indicator bulb. These I will change but I will def not go with the front LED strip.

You need a LED bulb that takes as much current as a normal bulb (often done with an additional resistor in parallel), otherwise the bulb failure warning will go off.

Not the most intrcate either, those with LED DRL's have to locate the resistor in the headlight housing and often in the access cap or outside of it attached to bodywork with wires running into the headlight unit.

Not a particularly easy job but can be done. Also you have the get the right resistor; some reported the resistor getting so hot it melted the headlight access cap!

the resistor needs to make an approx 1W LED take enough current to "fool" the bulb failure system that it's a 21W bulb - so the resistor has to dissipate 10-20W, so it's gonna get hot.

Let us know how you get on with the numberplate bulbs as the ones I tried (complete units made by "racing dash") triggered bulb out warnings so I don't think the Rashing Dash ones work with the colour DIS.

"I" wouldn't - just a topic of discussion as we were on about rear LEDs in another thread :beerchug:

Well, just to update everyone, BM are getting me LED bulbs which will hopefully be a direct replacememnt for the standard 12V21W bulb that is used for this ( I took one out to check at weekend) I will let everyone know when I get them.

I am also getting LED indicator bulbs that light up orange to fit into my new LED lamp clusters. Again, will let you know how they look and work...

Will they have a built in resistor or is it an in parallel i.e. dangling on a wire resistor?
