Rear calipers serviceable?

Post by lengster1 » Sun Dec 14, 2008 5:47 pm

Can you get a service kit for the rear calipers? I suspect one of mine has a lazy handbrake mechanism and presume i will have to pop out the piston to get at the ratchet set up?

The only service kit is the caliper seals, which consists of two seal for each caliper. One for the outer protective boot, and one seal inside the caliper.

Take the caliper off the car, unscrew the piston. Replace both seals, check for any damage...clean associated parts, and put back together. Bleed the system, and check correct operation.

I think you'll find quite a few B5's have split rear caliper seals. Got to do my own ones when I get time!

As long as the chrome hasn't started to come of the piston you wont have a problem.

Ok guys if its the piston thats sticking and a standard overhaul thats no probs at all,i was thinking it was the handbrake mechanism and wasnt sure if it was stripable, will pop the piston out in the morning and take it from there, thanks guys

I've never serviced a rs4 rear caliper , What happens with other hand brake calipers is the shaft that corrodes that links the arm to the internal screw thread . This can some times be cleaned up but it will go again as the chrome has gone.
