SD Cards - Size is everything

Post by stenning » Wed Nov 25, 2009 12:19 pm

I am looking to buy an SD card to put some music on via the SD slot behind the main screen on the entertainment system. Can anyone say the largest size one they have got to work with the Audi system?

Actual link to item would be appreciated.

Cheers

No and in a "normal" RNS-E they never will.

Why? The "normal" RNS-E only works with SD cards, and not SDHC cards - and the maximum size of an SD card is 4GB.

SD card size: <= 4GB.

SDHC card size: >= 4GB (max 32GB, above that would be an SDXC card).

So up to 2GB is an SD card, 8GB upwards is an SDHC card, 4GB can be either.

I kept saying "normal" RNS-E above because the new 2010 RNS-E does work with SDHC cards.

If you've got an RS4 then you haven't got a 2010 RNS-E - they're only made for the R8, TT and A3.

So the best cards for an RS4 are 2gb SD cards right, or will 4GB SD also work? Thanks very much

4GB will work and with that you can use a higher rip rate and get better sounds quality supposedly and still get the maximum readable 512 files on it, but I'm mutton Geoff so can't appreciate that.

Provided it's an SD card and not an SDHC card - the majority of 4GB cards are now SDHC, so be VERY careful before you buy.

I almost went crazy when I saw the q5 reads sdhc cards with the basic concert stereo. :( .
Have prices on the 2010 rns-e started to drop yet?

I recently bought Kingston & SanDisk 4GB SD cards but neither worked in the RNS-E same "reading card" & then eventually "empty". I am having some corespondence with SanDisk as to why they marked their SDHC cards up as SD but at the moment have given up on 4GB cards as I also found at 192 KBs I wasn't getting a lot more songs on the cards anyway before I hit the 512 files & folders limit & can't be bothered to re-rip at a higher Bitrate.

That's because 12GB cards are SDHC cards - and as has been posted here many times the pre-2010 RNS-E doesn't work with SDHC cards.

up to 2GB -> SD.
4GB -> SD or SDHC, but most are SDHC now.
8GB or greater -> SDHC.

Anyone know where I can get 4GB SD cards from? Amazon had 4GB SD cards , but on further investigation, it transpired there as PetrolDave suggests SDHC!!!
