panel filter Vs cone filter

Post by cossymad » Tue Sep 25, 2007 8:43 am

I is currently running 509bhp with a K&N panel filter but wanted a bit of Xtra noise and maybe 1bhp too.
I have always had very good gains with cone filters / induction kits in the past on previous cars, but how about on the RS4's?
Anyone running a cone filter atm?
I was going to go for a BMC Carbon Dynamic Airbox, and I sell loads to std motors with no problem, but the rumour is they restrict power at around 480bhp.
I was gonna get the K&N one and get a power run done if there is no definative answer anyway.

I hear that Cone filters (57i kits) will destroy the MAF.....
An opinion is like an asshole, everybody has got one.

I have somewhere between 5-550bhp and wouldn't dream of anything but an Audi filter

As Kieran says - riddle your airbox with holes! You'll get some extra noise then .... and some extra air.

I've got an ITG foam panel filter - (I've had stock Audi paper, K&N and Green cotton gauze filters) - foam is best IMHO.

Most cone filters are oiled , the oil sticks to the maf and gives a poor reading.

Why, are you selling some? - You've obviously got enough of your own to spare.

Not all cone filters are oiled.
Pipercross ones come with out being oiled
Powertec ones use stainless steel gauze with no oil.
K&N panel filters are pre-oiled so surely the oil is not an issue.
I was chatting to a guy who fitted a Piercross cone to his S4, and the MAF <beep> itself. He replaced it with a brand new one, and since then the car has been fine. This is also true for a customer of mine with a TT.
I think the initial increase of airflow could be the reason the sensor goes wrong, as it is almost like it has been stuck there, reading the same <beep> forever, and fears change!!
I just want a bit of extra noise. My car sounds like a 500bhp Dyson !!! I may have to replace the centre section of the Milltek with a custom made straight through section, with no box instead.

ooooooo harsh...
...but fair.

Never had a cone filter - but the K&N, Green and ITG panel filters are all oiled - and none of them have affected/killed a MAF on my car ... guess I'm just lucky.

I'm a bit like you - I like the noise of the induction kit... I've had a K&N one fitted to my RS for a few thousand miles, through France in 35 degree Centigrade heat and everything was fine. The MAF was fine, temperature was fine, and so on. I did however shield it well with proper 2-4 layer aluminium heat shield and ensured there was extra airflow to it from all sides.

I've since removed it and now have a K&N filter panel in the stock filter box - can't tell any difference on power without a rolling road, but it still works fine. No changes in temps or anything and no MAF issues.

I'm now toying with the idea of putting the K&N cone back in (as I love the sound) but making a proper circular aluminium heat shield and basically enclosing the cone in a heat shield box, with extra airflow from both the stock front vent and from my now removed headlight washers as a vent (see the front of the dahlback RS4 - yes i know it also has a vented carbon bonnet for additional air flow and cooling)

The only issue i have with the stock air box is the following. When the ECU decides it needs more air, it opens the flap in the front of the air box to let in more air - but surely as this is located just behind the headlight and above the turbo intercooler and near the exhaust manifold, it's going to suck in more hot air, than say an induction kit with some proper heat shielding and designated air flow...

As far as I can tell the more cold air the better, and whether that comes from the stock air box or a cone, or a filter panel it doesn't matter so long as it's cold. And obviously common sense tells you that oil on the MAF is bad... so the less oil the better on any filters. (please feel free to shout me down if you lot disagree)

I'm thinking i want to try all 3 options (stock, stock with filter panel and Cone with heat shield) and actually measure what's best. If there is only a couple of hp in it, then why not go with what you want, or what sounds best!

Just my 2p worth!

Stu.
