Connection between the S4 and the PC seems to be impossible!

Post by C-24 » Sat Dec 02, 2006 8:08 pm

Hi,

I just received an OBD II cable, and Vag-com software.

I tried several hours to connect my pc to the S4, and it's impossible!

I decided to try with an other laptop, same problem!

Vag-com says I have to select the COM port, so I select the Com3, it's okay and it says : interface status -5 MODEM

when I try to run some options like "engine" or "OBDII compatibility", it just doesn't work... it says : possible problems -> turn the ignition on, wrong interface or something like that...

I tried then many many other programs, same thing...

What do you think the problem is ?

If VAG-COM tells you you have a modem on COM 3, I would believe it. Go to Device Manager, pull up the properties sheet for your modem and see for yourself.

What kind of "OBD II" cable did you get? Is it 9-pin Serial or USB?

I have got an R-232 (it's the serial cable) not the USB one.

I will try to resolve that, thanks.

But when you plug the 9-pin serial cable in the serial port, shouldn't the computer tell you something like "a new hardware has been connected" ? Because I don't get any message.

The serial port on the computer isn't Plug-n-play so won't pop up any messages.

Correct.

Furthermore serial ports do not provide any power to the attached device so VAG-COM cannot tell if a serial interface is connected unless the other end is plugged into the car.

I think the abs is working...

I really don't know why I can't connect the notebook to the car...

I'm not sure how to choose the correct "COM" ... I'm really not a newbie when it comes to computers and everything, but now I feel like nothing's
working and I don't know what to do!
I am going to try with my third notebook (a real old one with windows 95, maybe that should do the trick?)

We'll see. :)

I tried the OBDII cable with 4 different computers, on both my father's A8 and my S4, and NOTHING's working!

What should I do ? Do I have to setup something in the device manager page? If so, how must I do it?

I would really appreciate if someone could tell me a step by step setup (and, yes, I read the rosstech site, I've done everything I could do on the computer)...
I can't resolve that problem from 3weeks or so and that's very annoying...

Thanks for help! :(

Ah, have you tried asking whomever you bought the lead from for help?

I can assure you that if you bought a lead from Ross-Tech or any of our authorized resellers that they would assist you with this, in real-time on the phone if necessary.

Is the cable a Ross-tech cable or a generic OBDII cable?

It is a generic one. It's possible the cable doesn't work at all, in that case, it's a shame not to provide such a simple cable that works.

I am using the 311n2 something like that (also tried the 3.0.3.1) because I don't have the USB cable, but the R-232.
