S6 to RS4 ?

Post by ott » Fri Apr 04, 2003 6:40 pm

Hi to everybody here, it's my first post although I have been reading this message board for a while. I'm not English speaking, so excuse my probably bad grammar.

I do own currently 2001 S6 Avant w. 6-speed manual, bought it year ago and haven't had much trouble since - except coolant leak because of broken coolant line from block to Webasto. It's comfortable, farily quick car with decent interior space. Now I have been offered to swap my S to 2000 RS4 with 53 k. km on the clock. Money wise I have to add about € 5 k., but this is not my concern.

I would like to get your opinions, why I should get RS4 instead my S6 or why I shouldn't ?

Is RS4 much more unreliable compared to S ? RS is equipped with 18" Projektzwo wheels, are those less prone to bend than OEM wheels, or should I expect troubles, roads here are mostly in very bad condition. How different are those cars in everyday use and in performance use ? I have been on few track days and my S6 could run some pretty decent times, quicker than many "sportscars". So, give me some pro's and con's !

Thanks

Both are very nice cars. remember that the RS4 is a 2.7 V6 Bi-turbo and not a V8 like your S6...... personally i would got with the RS4! try and bring the 5000 euro price down alittle, the less you put towards it the better

Hi OTT.

There is only one reason why you shouldnt, and that is if you really do need the extra internal space afforded by the S6.

I know a chap who currently has 85,000 miles on his RS4, has experimented with various different chips during that mileage, and the only problem he ever has is with his OEM rims, but you have that angle covered already

Go for the RS4. You will have to recalibrate your senses after being used the the S6. Apparently the jump is bigger than if you had come from an S4.

Downside - rear leg room IMHO as Tim suggests

Plus side - well the list is endless, no competition really
Can't beat a bit of boost!

No I haven't, yet... But I have driven many cars as fast or faster than RS4 and even own one which is as quick as RS, so I can imagine the performance.

I will be test driving it next week, if weather conditions are favourable - we got lot's of snow here right now.:(

Thanks for your opinions and keep them going !

The RS4 is a much smaller car. It is a toy, really. Otruns the S6 as it is lighter. I did not like the S6 a lot, although it was a very impressive car. If you drive on your own, the RS4 is just fine. Much harder ride though. (maybe it is my 42 psi tyre pressure) Just have a look at the options, I was offered a straight swap when the rims were bending so an extra 5000 could be a rip off.

I drove both cars. The s6 avant which I drove felt quiet heavy..And it was fitted with a automatic box which I didn´t like at all...
Of course a s6 has a lot more space than a rs4. It is Also a better cruiser. You wrote about the bad roads over there. The s6 is a perfect fast roomy and comfotable car.
The rs4 is more a sports car. You´ve got more contact with the road..(on a track this is perfect..but on a bad road???) it´s also very small inside..
But the big plus with a rs4 is its performance...
It´s hard to compare it with a s6. It´s a totally different car. Once you drove it..you´re hooked to it..
it isn´t that practical(although it is an avant), but It brings you all the pleasure ... and that is what driving is all about...

probably the rs4 will also keep better it´s value during comming years..

good luck with the test drive, and keep us informed

I had a S6 Avant -2000 here in sweden half a year / 10.000km. Comfortable car with a lot of space in the boot, sporty = not!

I bought a RS4 a week ago and i'm hooked allready. It performs 430bhp/550nm = huge difference to the S6 340 naturally inspirated bhp.

The RS4 is by far the nicest car i've driven (compering to Golf R32 Porsche 996 etc...)

Noting bad to say about the car realy..

(My english isn't so good either..)
