Ben. Mask off and run a thin full length of waterproof silicon bead to the exterior as well as your interior fix.
Should stop any water ingress.
Mask the tailgate
Mask the ally trim
And you would hardly notice the silicon if it’s neatly applied.

Don't think I could live with silicone on the outside of the car, no matter how neatly applied. And it wouldn't be great if I did it. Not my strong point.

Cannot go wrong if you mask up properly.
Spray the thinly applied silicon with soapy water.
Ice lolly stick to remove excess.
You would have to look very hard to see it once it had dried.
But yeah. I get what you are saying I wouldn’t want silicon on my car exterior. But as a temp fix if I had water ingress. Yes I would.
Just thinking. If you silicon the interior only. Surely rain will still be getting in.
So the water will build up until it finds the next easiest way out.

My neighbour had a problem with the panoramic sunroof on his Skoda (apparently all the pano roofs on VAG have a similar problem) and we bought some Captain Tolleys creeping crack cure. Works a bloody treat. Sure you could dribble some down from the outside and build up over time to stop the leak.

Oooh, I like the sound of that. I'm gonna get some. It should be easy enough to pour into the gap between the trim and the boot. Is it easy enough to wipe the excess off? Don't think the blue will go with my Daytona grey.

Hehe. It was more brown, yellow, and black with white streaks, to be fair.

Captain Tolley's applied... will be curious to see if it works.

Draging this back up, I have water getting in the tailgate both sides through the aluminium trim each end and the nuts are very rusty. Ben did you stop your leak in the end? did you take the trim off?

The Captain Tolleys seems to have fixed it. I think I applied it a couple of times to be on the safe side. I might apply some more as a preventitive measure.

The black goop stuff is quite good. Have used that on several cars where water just somehow weasels its way in.
