J393 Convenience Controller

Post by ATinOf » Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:19 pm

Seems my J393 controller has a fault on it, the off side fog light output is dead. Fault finding today on the unit as the lamps been out a while, so much for the 'oh it'll just be the bulb' idea. Doesnt look like dry joints on the 32 pin connector but I will check that later.

Anyone come across this before, or replaced this controller? 4FO 907 289K. There is a suffix N one (not K) on fleasrusbay, anyone know if the N is compatible, it will have later software...

Thanks

Nothing immediately obvious on the board, no burnt SMD's, bulging capacitors, burnt tracks etc so likely an internal failure of a component or cracking solder.

Ok so I swapped out the controller without first checking the coding to set the replacement to. 😣

Swapped them back had a whole host of errors and now lost Comms to the original controller. Sigh.

Can someone check the coding for me to see what it should be, my fleabay special is as image, I'm expecting it to be wrong....

Here's mine (Avant) with the additional table so you can attempt to work out what your number should be -

Ok, so life has gotten in the way a bit but finally got round to looking at this... I wish Id not left it so long...

Straight off the bat, found the battery dying ;(, hooked up a secondary battery to diagnose.

Having lost communication with my convenience controller entirely now (dont know why), I investigated Ians coding to determine mine (thanks again Ian). First thing you realise is the coding helper is helpful; but its not idiot proof; the module codes it provides refer mainly to default units that are not all present on the label in the boot, doh.

So given Ians is an AVANT, as is mine, I simply skipped the bit for the sunroof and assumed all others the same...

Interestingly bit 9 is 'right hand steering' but is set to zero.
Also interesting is there is no bit 16 nor bit 20 in the coding descriptive listing.

Bottom line my coding had to be
1100100010001011111011 (binary), or 3285755 (decimal)
Happy days.... or is it....

.....Not really, I now have a couple of error codes unrelated that will not go away, I am putting them down to low battery and the fact I havent run it since charging yet.

But I also have gone from one fog light down (reason I was changing teh controller in the first place) to 5 damn lights down, good grief charlie brown ;( Of course I dont actually know the state of the second hand unit..... assumed its working as did the seller......

And the other obvious anomaly, which I was expecting, is the car knows I have changed the controller and has flagged it as not security coded (its part of the suite of security controllers). However that doesnt stop me from running the car ;)

My unit codes are the same as Ian's
Coding 3547899
Workshop code 02556
Importer number 785
Equipment number 00200
I can't get all the options I know of (RHD Avant, with sunroof, LEDs, inclination sensor, convenience on key fob, all the rear lid stuff etc etc) to add up to 3547899, I'm around 8000 or so short.

Ok so this is frustrating me now. Gone out to have another look at this and the issue is expanding. The boot opener no longer works, it did previously after I changed the controller, and Im getting the G85 steering controller fault code, thats new. Checking the steering angle in the ABS module group, its static at zero regardless of steering movement. Now I hate coincidences it seems a bit too convenient (no pun intended, convenience controller doh), but it strikes me as very odd that she hasnt moved, nothings changed, yet Ive lost another sensor and another function... I cant see the calibration working if the sensor is reading naff all... voltage at terminal 30 left and right is solid...

Damn frustrating, I only have another hour before I have to be elsewhere, Im getting nowhere fast on this at the minute. I need to set more time aside to get stuck into it.
