Current C5 RS6 residual values

Post by stevo55 » Tue Mar 18, 2025 10:47 am

Has anyone noticed how much the residuals have fallen for the cars recently?! Seeing what (at face value) seem to be pretty well sorted cars on low-ish mileage going for £8-10k. Even Plus models that were in the 20’s now seem to be going for around 13-15k. I know the car market this past number of years has been all over the place but it’s not ideal let’s face it. Let’s hope they come back up. I’m slowly considering going back to a C6 (if I do this time it would be a tuned one as they can put down serious power).

I'm thinking the values will follow the RS2 curve, albeit to a lesser degree. When I bought my RS6, RS2 were going for as little as 10k. I almost bought one at the same time as the RS6 but decided to be reasonable. Big mistake.

Anyway, at this stage in the curve, there are still plenty of cars around that are hanging on by a thread. They go from owner to owner with no-one willing to invest in the upkeep, and very quickly they get broken and disappear. Or they get modified, denaturing them completely and nullifying their classic value. Suddenly there are none left and values start to go up again because 1) rarer and 2) the ones that survive have been well looked after. That's my theory, anyway. Try to find an RS2 for less than 50k.

The e46 M3 is a bit further along the curve. When's the last time you saw one of those on the road?

As for the C6, I think this is even less of a good investment. Other than the engine, they really have not much going for them. The ugliest of the RS6s. They're not the first of a kind like the C5. They're not as good as the C7.

All my opinion, for what it's worth. Which is nothing.

I hear you and the C6 is a lump, I had the saloon version and lost very little money on that (like my F80 M3 Comp). As always the non forum classifieds are filled with some very ropey looking cars that would just drain you (hence why I bought Matt’s old C5 which is still running well albeit needing a new battery and the rear washer stopping working).
R8’s are holding up well it seems if you have the right ones and the trouble being that there is a ‘clocking’ issue with some which have been used as rentals or (even worse) an ‘IG/Wedding/Event’ car whereby they’ve had more arses in them than Wembley and ragged to death. Trouble is I’ve had mine a year and done 3k miles. Debating whether (yet again-this is nothing new to me unfortunately) to keep hold of an awesome car that I pay a big chunk every month and it just sits there.

I guess you are referring to prices in the UK?
Here in mainland Europe there are only 2 examples with 170K KM (105K miles) or less, starting at 19K euros (approx £16K). The other 16 cars for sale vary between 26k euros to 50k euros (£22k - £42k ).
The cheapest PLUS+ for sale right now is a 111K KM (69K miles) example for 45K euros (approx £38K).
The UK car market has always been special and with lower purchase prices than many other countries. This lower price is reflected in today’s values.
Combined with much talk about parts availability, the values are dropping. I am currently shipping Audi Tradition parts to America and UK more than ever before.
I hope in the near future, that potential buyers and owners start to appreciate their cars more with the EV revolution looming and this will push prices back up as they become desired?

Stevo55: Yeah, I get it. A lot depends on what you want the car for. I don't find it a lot of fun driving these days so my enthusiasm for cars is waning. I like collecting them (or rather I've got a phobia of selling them) but I think I'm at peak cars. There's nothing that I *want*. Plenty of things that I quite like, but not enough to stump up the money and hassle of diving into the unknown again. I thought I'd be more interested in classics, but the opportunity has come to acquire a 60's Mustang and I'm shying away from it to my surprise, even though I've always wanted one. Anyway, it's not about me.

TOPMAN: Yeah, I just looked at values in Switzerland (I like Swiss cars - generally very well looked after) and the prices are all over the place. High milers are going for 10k GBP. One very pricey Plus at 56k. Some stuff in the middle. No clear picture of what's going on. Reinforces my curve theory, possibly. :) LHD cars are gonig to have a much bigger market than RHD so are less susceptible to whims than the UK market.

They are in the awkward phase of just being old and expensive to keep running. Prices really haven't moved since I first bought mine. Retail was £7-8k for a poor one and about £12-13k for a minty low mileage one. It still is.

The saloons are already pretty rare but apparently nobody wants those and everyone wants the less rare estate.

For performance and noise to the pound in purchase cost there's nothing that is such good value but running costs will always be the problem as you have the expensive cam belt/water pump every few years, plus the gearbox service for every few years. Plus risk of gearbox failure costing you £££ and then other random other things that are also £££. A lot of the repair starts with 'drop engine' so that's a lot of work and it's hard to find competent garages that can drop that engine and put it back correctly.

I've been stocking up on C5s in various conditions. I do feel they'll go the way of the B5 RS4 or the RS2. As genuine parts are becoming obsolete, more and more are being broken/scrapped or left to rot, which means road-worthy vehicles will become more desirable. The problem with the C5 has always been the running costs.

As TOPMAN says, you look at them over in Europe (albeit LHD, although I assume there are fewer RHD?) and a high-ish mileage one is going for nearly EUR20k. I think in another couple of years the value will be on the rise. What might be helpful, would be a VINWiki type thing where we actually know how many are actually left on the road and that would give a good indication on rareity/value

Interesting what you say about saloons vs estates. When I was selling my C6 ‘loon I approached Fontaine and as soon as I mentioned it was a saloon they declined. Their reasoning was that when people think of an RS6 they think of the Avant and hence saloons take a lot longer to sell (despite being rarer). Probably why the RS7 was created. Ultimately I lost no money (in fact gained some) when I sold the saloon but they are seen as a ‘lesser’ version of the estate (rightly or wrongly) it seems.

It's because of the extra satisfaction factor when you leave a Porsche for dust with a toilet in the boot on the way back from B&Q. Priceless.

Another has popped up at Ionic auctioneers. Another saloon, grey. 58k so low mileage.

Nice low miles albeit with an odd aftermarket exhaust (who has round pipes on an RS? I’d get quad exhausts but this is the type you see on a standard one). Going from the current asking prices and the fact it’s a saloon I’d put the estimated sale of £9-11k as ‘optimistic’ (mileage will help but what of the essential work such as DRC replacements has it had?).

It's a very generic listing with not much information at all.

Last winning in room bid was £8500. Not much more than some 2001 audi diesel with 6000 miles on it
