Silver Lining?
So I've just bought two non-runners; an C5 RS6 and a B7 RS4. Or so I thought. Cars have arrived with me today, and the "RS4" which is actually badged up as an RS6, is actually a C5 S6.
My plan with the RS6 was to convert to manual. This would mean sourcing a manual transmission. Am I right in thinking that a lot of conversions use the C5 S6 transmission for this?

Hello!
Wait what! LOL
So you thought you were buying a C5 and B7 but you ended up with 2 C5's, that sounds kinda crazy, but I assume you didn't see them before-hand because they are quite different.
A C5 with a V8 has an automatic gearbox, regardless if it's A6, S6 or RS6 - so to answer your question, no the gearbox from the S6 won't fit. And I'm starting to wonder if you have a C5 S6 or is it a C5 A6 V8?
The strongest box to use is the 01E from a 1.9TDI or 2.5tdi, but it has a very long top gear and lots of slop. The other gearbox option is OA3 B7 RS4 and I think B6 S4, but hard to find and not as strong as 01E. I recommend you speak with Lukasz Malinowski in some of the FB groups, he sells the parts for this conversion and is based in the UK.
Just remember that converting an automatic car to manual is not just a question of a manual gearbox and a pedal box. There are plenty of electrical changes and re-programming required to make things work nicely. I personally went against the idea of going manual when my gearbox <beep> the bed. An uprated auto-box, with modern materials and increased line pressure, will always be quicker than a manual, but arguably less fun. To be honest, I'm thankful for flappy paddles as she's that quick I wouldn't want to fight with a stick on a mildly twisty road.
P.S. If your "S6" really has a manual and a V8 engine, then maybe that box will work. We can help identify the car if you send some photos, many A6's are badged as S6's.
Regards
Craig

Re: Silver Lining?
Yeah so funny story! Was buying an RS6 C5 from someone and he said that he also had an RS4 B7. Both cars haven't ran since 2018. The story behind the cars is that the owner was renting a very large unit from a company to store/work on cars/boats. The guy went bankrupt and the company repo'd all the cars and boats in an attempt to recoup their debt. I bought them from this company. They sent me the reg's and they matched up to a C5 RS6 and a B7 RS4. Sent a lad with a trailer down to pick them up. When they've arrived the "RS4" is actually badged up as an RS6 (but on the reg that matched up to the RS4). When I've ran the VIN, it actually comes back as a bog standard A6 4.2l (ASG eng code). It was originally a 5-speed auto, that someone has converted to a manual. It's a total <beep> showTOPMAN wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 1:59 pmHello!

I'll be getting them on ramps over the weekend to see what actually is going on underneath. My post was a little premature as I hadn't ran the vin before posting.
And I've done a few conversions on my previous ones. I really want to go silly with this RS6 and see how many ponies we can cram into it:) Just figured if this RS4/C5 A6 V8 had the same box it would save me buying another core to beef up
Cheers
Jim
Re: Silver Lining?
How did you get on at the weekend?
If you need me to check any VINS for you I can, which will hopefully put to bed any queries you may have (y)

Never got chance to do it! Been fitting the engine/box in another C5 I'm doing. Will be doing it at some point this week so will keep you updated! The vin of the fugazi RS4/6 is WAUZZZ4BZ1N078538
Re: Silver Lining?
It’s not an RS if it starts WAU

Re: Silver Lining?
Yes, was sold to me as an RS and the reg that was on the pictures matched up to an RS with WUA. When the car arrived it had the wrong plates on and only saw the VIN when it arrived. Seller has issued me a reasonable refund for the mix up. (Assume he didn't know as he repo'd the cars off the previous owner and just sold it as whatever it was badged as)

Re: Silver Lining?
Part No on side of gearbox is 01E 301 103 KL. Can't see the actual gearbox code just yet. But would this be suitable to use?

As I suspected that a Audi C5 A6 with the 300hp V8 engine, not S6 or RS6

Re: Silver Lining?
Thanks pal! Yeah, a bummer. The seller was great and refunded me the money for that car! So I've ended up with two cars for the price of one so I suppose there's my silver lining haha! Someone also converted that A6 to a manual, so if I can't use that specific box, at least I'll be able to use things like the pedal box and what not! Surprisingly, after 7 years of standing, both run after a small amount of work!TOPMAN wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 10:05 amJust seen your update Jim - heres the info.JamesLawrance wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 11:35 pmNever got chance to do it!
