Full Clutch Kit Recommends

Post by Zyox » Thu Oct 31, 2024 11:17 am

Hi all. Getting to that age where she's still on the factory clutch and flywheel and I want to head it off now as it's approaching 150k KMs before I end up stuck at the side of the road some day.

Anyone care to share their experiences with clutch and flywheel replacements over the past few years? Nothing going back 5 years in the search is throwing up anything so I thought I'd start a modern discussion on it to try and go in the right direction.
Spoken to my indy mech about it and feels we should do full clutch kit (clutch plate, disc, and flywheel) along with release bearing and fork and spring. Would also like to do all new bolts and while it's out things like gaskets for exhaust, cooling thermostat sensor, rear main crank seal and the crank sensor.

Big job I know but investing in it now as she's been daily for 13-14 years and intend to keep going but the time is now to get ahead of any potential gearbox issues and I'd prefer to do it all right. Help very much appreciated. Thanks all. :notworthy:

edit: should have added - would like it to behave and feel as close to OEM as possible. Always been happy with that part of the car. So not looking for any triple plate hardcore mayhem! :thumb:

The standard LUK clutch kit is OEM spec and includes the release bearing and is what you want. I had mine done not long ago. Yes, use new bolts.

I also did crank sensor and coolant temp sensor. There was no need to do crank seal.

I got the flywheel from Rock Auto in the USA delivered all in for around £550 to the UK.

Are the Crank sensor and coolant temp sensors "while you're in there' jobs?

If so, any idea of part numbers?

Thanks,

I just did the clutch job recently (see video below):

Look at the ATC video for a good tutorial on what the job looks like:

I could not get the crankshaft sensor out of the transmission and we had to pull the transmission with the sensor still in which broke the sensor. You can get a replacement for less than $20 on Amaxzon: Walker Products 235-1522: https://a.co/d/czum93t

I went with the JHM clutch and lightweight flywheel but I am racing the car. Honestly I would dump the stock dual mass flywheel and go for a single mass version, those clutch packs in the stock flywheel don't age well (you can see in my first video what a stock clutch/flywheel looks like at 125k miles).

I would recommend to replace the slave cylinder and the rubber line if you still have the original one while you are in there.

Hope this helps
Emmanuel

About to pull the plug on this in the coming weeks and still trying to decide between the OEM LUK dual mass flywheel and a single mass flywheel. The single mass obviously gives me more options for clutches but I'm worried about noise and feel. I'm reading that the fully steel ones aren't bad at all in this regard compared to the aluminium ones. Can anyone weigh in on this. It's street/city driving a lot of the time with some motorway and I daily it so I'm trying to keep the feel and smoothness comfy while still being able to have fun when able.

Option one was DMF with LUK OEM flywheel and a sachs perf clutch.
Option two was something like the stage one JHM SMF and their clutch.
Opinions welcome and requested.
