2008 JDM RS6 VCDS Scan Help

Hi All,

Recently picked up an '08 RS6 into Canada from the Japanese market (RHD).

Had some issues with the MMI not working, screen is on with the 'mute' symbol shown. Managed to figure out that the amp was toast, so in the middle of trying to figure out if an A6 Avant amp of the same style will work.

In the meantime, I got a VCDS cable and ran a scan. Below is the read out. Done some searching, and it looks like most of the faults are electrical components that will take some time to track and fix. All in all though, car drives fine. Just a few options don't work.

Looking for some input from the boffins here to see if there's anything from the scan that raises alarm bells. Nearest dealership is 2 hrs away, and they also have limited exposure to this car as it was never a North American model.

Hi there and welcome to the forum!

As the fault logs are stored over time, first thing I'd do is clear all DTC's then drive it for a few days and then scan the fault logs again. This just to make sure that the faults that you've got right this minute aren't just old glitches (all ecu's have them) or old faults which are long since fixed and so the codes you have right now are genuine "its broke right this minute" faults that you can concentrate on. For example some of those faults above are from 2020!

I say this because I've just been working on another guys car which had been in storage for a while (similar to your importing a car) which also had a long list of comms faults and it seems to be that when the battery in these cars dies its flags up lots of "Communication" issues between modules which all need to be cleared from the fault log first otherwise the cars various ECU's & control modules, even though they now have a good battery powering everything, can occasionally still be held in that "I'm broken" mode by these old fault codes, when in reality they're actually fine and after clearing the codes the Module Comms will suddenly spring back into life.

Now, I know that this is not going to clear everything but its a great start to make sure you're approaching whatever faults are left from a clean sheet and not having any old fault codes causing issues.

There will be a few fault codes keep coming back, which I've seen on multiple cars, or are simple fixes -

07-Control Head -- Status: Malfunction 0010 - The J197 module which lives behind the glove box is broke.

13-Auto Dist. Reg -- Status: Malfunction 0010 - Usually needs new ACC sensor in front bumper, check to see if its cracked and let water in.

37-Navigation -- Status: Malfunction 0010 - Antenna connection at the rear roof can corrode, usually needs a new antenna to fix it.

46-Central Conv. -- Status: Malfunction 0010 - H12 Alarm Horn - Theres a small battery inside the alarm horn. Replace the whole horn or just break into the sealed unit and replace the battery.

61-Battery Regul. -- Status: Malfunction 0010 - The cars battery voltage dropped to a low level. The car will auto-shutdown systems to prolong battery life until the battery is recharged.

Battery - either recharge it using the posts under the bonnet or disconnect it, charge it fully then reconnect and change the code by one digit to fool the module into thinking that it's a new battery.
Door handle touch sensor - replacement handle. You'll need one with the sensor. Can be a sod to release the locking tabs on the handle retainer inside the door.
Driver's air bag sensor - it is a dark brown or black item bolted to the back of the radiator frame about inline with the inner edge of the RH head light and hidden in a metal guard, has a bright yellow multi-plug connected to it. Easy enough to change, disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes to be on the safe side then remove two Torx head screws and pull the sensor back to release a locating pin from the frame.
Alarm horn unit is under the plenum cover, fixed to a bracket on the heater.
