Sanity check needed
This seems a very healthy page which is more than can be said for the R8 one!
Recently returned Audi RS owner and came from an E63s estate (spoiler alert-it was awesome). Now in a 2016 4S R8 V10 Plus-a very very worthy replacement.
Why the sanity check? Well the R8 isn’t exactly practical and whilst I have a 2012 Defender it’s a pig to drive as it’s heavily modified (on 35 inch tyres ++++) and more about the experience than any comfort.
I have always lusted after a C5 RS6 ever since they came out and things like (yes I know cliche alert) Layer Cake didn’t help either.
I had a C6 and then had two C7’s.
I’m thinking of a C5 as a sort of daily (I WFH mostly nowadays with the odd long trip)
I’ve read the buyers guide and am fairly aware of major issues so not completely blinkered. Wouldn’t want a project and something that would a) be a money pit or b) break down every time I got in it.
So am I dreaming and need to stop sniffing bath salts or is this a solid choice?
Either that or a nice watch!
Awaiting the comments and maybe mockery who knows….
Edited to add-as with everything it’s down to budget which would be £10-12k maybe a bit more.

Re: Sanity check needed
Thought so. But sometimes you get people posting on the C5 forum looking for info on the C6.
They are great cars. But I fear you might be disappointed coming from a V10 R8 in terms of face-melting performance. They’re still quick, obviously. But not in the brutal way the R8 V10 is.
I personally haven’t really had any major expenses. Hope I haven’t jinxed it now.
My biggest worry is starting to be availability of parts.
But if you know all that and are still interested then your timing is perfect. Matt has just put his up for sale.

Re: Sanity check needed
Thanks mate that’s heartening and the performance isn’t the thing really and you are correct-the R8 is an absolute lunatic of a car. So was the E63s to be honest but heavier and a different type of animal plus a bit too complex-especially the operating system. The R8 is just sharper and being n/a the gearbox changes are lightening quick.Shoppinit wrote:Thought so. But sometimes you get people posting on the C5 forum looking for info on the C6.

The C5 has the character and is another legendary ‘cool’ car and that attracts me. I’m lucky enough to have owned some legendary motors (expensive habit) and the C5 is an old itch.
Can remember seeing one accelerating past in London when they first came out-stuck with me.

Re: Sanity check needed
I recently picked up a C5 few months back now and have put 2k on it so far..
Yes they can be expensive, 20 years old now so things tend to always need doing. But the character of it, people look at it, and the usability i love it, i don't daily it but it gets a lot of use.
I think you have to come into these with an open mind now that at any moment you could have an issue and such is life!

You can also get some pretty hair-raising bills with things like E63 AMGs or R8s...

Re: Sanity check needed
Yes true, my AMG was a 2019 model and Mercedes give a 2 year warranty on approved used which was unusually nice seeing as BM & Audi give 1. I think it had a faulty light in my 2 year ownership. Pretty reliable things and was a car that imho didn’t need any ‘tweaks’ as it’s a complete animal stock (some are getting 800bhp so lord knows what they are like to handle). The R8 is a new thing for me but it’s over 8 years old now, 21,700 on the clock and I’m the 4th owner. Very clean example with FASH-my hope is the biggest expense will be filling it up! Thirsty beasts they are but not as bad as say, my old C6 RS6 which was ridiculous (average 16 mpg).Shoppinit wrote:You can also get some pretty hair-raising bills with things like E63 AMGs or R8s...
A well cared for car (such as on these forums) is to me the way ahead. When looking for my C6 I viewed some horror stories that would have been a nightmare to own.

Re: Sanity check needed
Just to round off this thread-followed the advice on Matt’s car and today went to visit him and drove it back home!
To say he’s been meticulous and diligent in his ownership and care of the car is an understatement. Presented me with a ‘War & Peace’ sized folder of everything that has been done and then some.
Had a fun drive home and the old girl can pull that’s for sure! Going through tunnels was enjoying the Milltek bellowing away.
Now it’s time to figure out how everything works and get used to things like no start/stop etc.
happy bunny here, thanks for all the help and a huge thanks to Matt!

Thanks Steve. This forum was a real reason why ended up keeping the car so long - having an active community of members makes it much more enjoyable. It's been a real pleasure knowing you all. No egos, just a bunch of friendly and likeminded enthusiasts. But life moves on and I really need garage time to be spent rebuilding the Ultima now, plus it's likely I'll be doing a lot more mileage and have a lot less time over the next 3 years.steve2003rs6 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 7:58 amMatt keep in touch and keep sharing your vast knowledge of our cars.
I've got a couple of boxes of bits I need to sort out at some point - for example, I'm not sure how, but I ended up with another gearbox service kit when I only serviced the gearbox 2000 miles ago. I blame late nights & Jack Daniels.
Marcus - it was a pleasure to meet you, I hope you enjoy the car as much as I did.
