Transmission insert - cheap mod

Post by vishmr2 » Sat Dec 02, 2023 4:40 pm

Can get these for as little has 6 or 7 quid (like I did off Ebay) - or £100+ for the 034 motorsport one.

Didn't expect much but I think it has made a difference - and made shifts low down (reverse, 1st, 2nd) a bit smoother and less jerky. Would highly recommend.

Took about 5 minutes to fit (drove up on ramps and removed the 2 M10 spline bolts). The billet insert sits in the void of the original rubber mount. Fired a bit of grease around it and there's no noise, vibrations etc. Re-used the bolts and supposed to be torqued to 20nm.

Vish, I meant to ask you about that Mod. Did you notice much difference? I can't say I'm unhappy with mine, but for 15 quid and an easy fit, I'm happy to fire one on. See that other outfit are punting the identical part for 100 quid..

This will probably give you a better idea of what you're taking out and installing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkTY_V_wFYA

The stock setup is a surprisingly heavy rectangular piece which seems to have no real purpose and the insert (which actually feels lighter) fill the voids in the stock mount. Lots of reviews and chat about the 034 motorsport one and many reviews which confirm no side effects. The cheap Ebay ones appear to be the same (certainly wasn't going to pay £100 for something that might do nothing!)

Will give you guys a update once I've driven the RS properly (just back from underseal today - Stuart they seem to have done a good job - cheers again for the chat about it!) - will have the skirts back on Thursday and back to driving it Fri/at the weekend. I've only taken it for a careful 15 mile drive without side skirts on - but it does feel smoother with no added noise or vibrations.

Reserving judgement for when I get the car back (picked it up last week and wasn't happy with a few things) - he's sorting them and should have it back Friday at the latest. Will let you know how it goes!

How did he react when you raised an issue with him? Vish.. I just noticed this post.

My experience with his wife last year was like something out of a reality TV show. She has some deep seated issues and a big minus with regard to customer care..

Yeah he was OK very apologetic - it was mainly the jacking points which they hadn't prepped properly and just fired on some dinitrol over, which had already started cracking (because the surface wasn't prepared). And one other wee bit. Took it all right back and did it properly. No extra charge of course.

Will have a swatch at it in April when the oils changed...hopefully all good. Glad it's done but I think when the golf/mr2 need undersealed I'll just order the stuff from bilt hamber and do it myself!
