Coolant temperature sensor
Coolant temperature sensor
Hi everyone,
New owner here.
Cars been running fine but this weekend on a long run, the coolant gauge on the dash stopped working, I've checked on an obd reader with live data and coolant temperature gets to around 96 degrees which seems correct so everything seems to be working except the dash gauge, will swapping the coolant temperature sensor on the front of the engine fix this? And is it OK to drive ? It doesn't seem to do the usual "loud" cold start since this issue came up
Cheers
Tom

Re: Coolant temperature sensor
I have this exact same issue....no gauge Temp and Cold start not as per norm.....will investigate...
I had this before normally the gauge is only out for a couple of days, but this time its longer

Re: Coolant temperature sensor
Thanks for getting back to me ! I've ordered a new sensor but it's not arrived yet, I'll update if this fixes it
Re: Coolant temperature sensor
I took the sensor out this evening and gave it a good clean, this seemed to work.
Re: Coolant temperature sensor
Long nose pliers and 2 screwdrivers, remove all the pugs that are in the way first and just keep trying to turn it, cleaning it didn't last long so I've got to swap it out again.
Re: Coolant temperature sensor
Thanks for letting me know, I changed mine over the weekend, I ordered some Crows foot sockets, but there wasn't enough clearance for the Sensor socket, so I made one out of and old 17mm ring spanner and welded a old 3/8 drive socket to the side, this worked like a dream and the sensor was loose also, like you say get the other plugs out the way and use a large screw driver once free to rotate, I lubed up the new one and it went in like a charm....
However, I did drop my screwdriver down in the front of the engine, which prob took more time to retrieve than fitting the sensor

Re: Coolant temperature sensor
I generally tether my tools with strimmer line so I can recover them if (when!) I drop them. I didn't bother to do that with a spanner one day and just as I was finishing the job I dropped it near the back of the engine. From below I could just see it wedged between the downpipe and gearbox and managed to get it out with some really long pliers.
Re: Coolant temperature sensor
So I fitted a new Sensor and replaced the Low Fuel pressure sensor (don't ask) and still nothing, going to have to get the VCDS out now....
Cold start is not as it should be either...frustrating indeed

Re: Coolant temperature sensor
Connected the Laptop to the car and read the codes and now the gauge is working and the sensor is reporting the correct value...
oh well if it's working now then great

Re: Coolant temperature sensor
LOL, got to love "random" issues with weird fixes. I used to fix electronics and the amount of random stuff which just fixes itself once its forced into connecting to another device (code reader, laptop etc) is always a surprise.

Re: Coolant temperature sensor
Yeah, currently 'fixing' a massive flat screen tv. Replaced the T-conn board, no fix, replaced the driver board as well, no fix. Refitted the old T-conn board and the fault reduced, changed back to the original driver board, bigger improvement. Still not perfect but far better than it was.
Re: Coolant temperature sensor
Yeah it's frustrating as it's quite a bit of fiddling around to replace it....oh well sorted not and the Cold start seems normal also
Re: Coolant temperature sensor
What's the coolant temp sensor part number?
