DRC making rubbing sound / carbon clean

Post by mapocolyps11 » Thu Oct 19, 2023 1:52 am

Recently purchased a 2008 rs4 with 80k miles. Drove it for a few months and had no issues, but now im experiencing a squeeking/rubbing sound when the car does any sort of movement (going over a bump, road dips) pretty much anytime the struts/shocks go up or down. I even pushed the car down with my hand on the hood and it makes the squeek. All 4 corners makes the squeek. So im leaning towards the DRC system is failing and will have to convert to coilover. Only other issue with the car is it feels bogged down at times, mainly when shifting more aggresively in an up-shift, it will hesitate a bit before going when i hit the gas. Ignition system (coilpacks and spark plugs) first? Or go straight for the carbon clean?

Others may disagree, but the failure mode of the DRC is not normally squeaks.

A failing DRC tends to knock. A "loose golf ball in the boot" is a commonly compared noise.

Squeaks would suggest bushes more than shocks.

Given it has another issue too, I'd get it to a reputable independent and have them look over it, before self diagnosing and throwing money at it.

It'd be a shame to take the DRC off if you didn't need too, although there are probably not many 80K milers with it still installed.

Good luck

The traction control will give you the bogged down feeling when shifting gears aggressively, trying turning the ESP off to see if it still does it?

Agreed, squeaking is not normally a sign of a failing DRC system.

I get the golf ball in a boot noise as well sometimes, it comes and goes where the rubbing/deep squeak noise is more consistent. I will try the esp off….taking her to Audi next week to be looked at for the suspension noises.
