driveshaft boot tear - stop to drive? southern germany garage?

Post by anditsoundslikebells » Wed Sep 06, 2023 2:18 pm

i made it to basel.
in the end so did the 6.
i had to get it valued for the insurance before i left (eur37k). when it was on the lift i noticed what looked like oil around the front left wheel arch. upon inspection the interior boot of the driveshaft had a tear in it and i was looking at grease which had heated up and dispersed everywhere.
i found a new local audi garage, the mechanic said i was good to do the 680km journey so i set off the next day.
i now get a creaking noise from that area when i tune the wheel at low speeds, i guess it's all the time but i can't hear it.

is this something i should be worried about?
stop driving?
about 1.5hr work?

anyone know of a performance audi who might know/want to deal with these cars in southern germany? (switzerland is too expensive for me)

You definitely want to get it fixed. I don't think the creaking is related - possibly just coincidence.

You could just get a new drive shaft and fit it yourself.

Isn't there an Audi specialist in Besancon ? Maybe I'm dreaming it. Vinci or something. I think they were an MRC dealer.

Oh, it's a bit further than I thought:

I have a friend who has an excellent Audi dealer in Fribourg. Don't know what prices are like.

If it’s the oil seal.
Just had the front nearside driveshaft seal done.
It’s a lot more than just a seal.

Check out the thread “after run fans”
Last couple of pages I believe.
Really hope your problem is just grease leakage.

I think he's talking about the inner CV joint boot.

I've got a feeling that Astroquirrel isn't too far from Basel. Might be worth dropping him a PM. He's a helpful chap.

the issue is the rubber boot on one end of this shaft.

you can see the grease everywhere in the image.

apologies for my lack of knowledge.

I assume i'll also need someone to redo the tracking?

The top right? That's the inner CV joint boot.

You don't need to mess with the track rod ends to get the drive shaft off so you won't need to do the tracking unless you remove something you shouldn't.

You could something like this to *temporarily* fix the boot to be able to drive it to a garage a reasonable distance away (check fitting first obvs):

That's a decent valuation. Looks like RS6 prices are going up fairly steeply in the EU for lower mileage models. Good.

Life has been a bit of a mess for me lately.
Disrupting my whole life, flat, job, company, role, country... it me hit harder than I was expecting. Maybe a part of the BS covid-three-year-flat-renovation carried over.

Anyway. After three months things are coming together. Switzerland is beautiful, Basel fun, work... best not to mention that.

The RS has been tucked away in the second level basement carpark of the office. A marked improvement over the open/cover carpark of Holland, no neighbours, no cats, no homeless people $hitting behind my car.

This morning I caught sight of a mint C5 S6 rolling down the road in Basel... the first I've ever seen.

I followed the guy on my push bike... when the lights were red I tapped on his window. He was confused. A thoroughly helpful guy, super tidy car... only two problems, the two missing turbos!

Anyway, he put me on to this place, recommended I speak with Nico.

Anyone heard of them before? The guy I met said they were well known in Europe.

At this point I'm happy to find a garage locally who knows these cars. Germany would have been better as Switzerland is £££. I'll speak with them next week.
