Loose Gearshift

Post by highrise » Mon Jun 19, 2023 1:05 pm

Hi,

My RS4 has 130k and the gear shift has quite a bit of play in it. It can be hard to be accurate with gear selection. I've also driven other RS4's and the selection is much tighter.

I know there is a ball socket that can wear and cause the issue.

Has anyone had this issue and fixed it without replacing the entire unit (which I think it part number: 8E0711025QS)

Many thanks

replace the ball socket part as you have asked - i had this with 1st / 2nd gear
Check with audi the part number
I also fitted a JHM short shift to mine - Now that makes a difference !

Thanks for your response.

Where did you get the rebuild kit?

Would this work? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304856215780 ... BM5JPNg5ti

Many thanks

Cheers.

I might go with the JHM kit but want it as close to stock as possible.

Short shift is only the gear stick selecting mech in the centre console of the car. You can get other parts for it that attached to the gearbox but i didn’t see the point for a road car - the upgrade is enough and just takes a lot of travel out of your gear changes

Thanks, that's good to hear.

I was also thinking about replacing the (8D0798151) part, see image below.

I've heard it wears and makes a difference.

Does anyone know how easy this is to replace, i.e. access etc?

Cheers

My mechanic replaced that when i had the prop shaft repaired ( feltham prop repairs ) they fitted a cosworth knuckle as mentioned it’s the only one that is strong enough ?? Certainly took the hum out of my car when above 40mph

The audi design was a bit crap and unrepairable

That gear ball joint has made my gearbox excellent again. 1st / 2nd was sometimes a no go and had to hit reverse first and then 1st
